2025 Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Ultimate and Mazda CX-3 Sport

A new player is making waves in the economy SUV segment.

Since returning to Australia in 2023, Chery has unleashed a raft of affordable models onto the market, designed to test our allegiance against heritage brands and established Chinese rivals.

First there was the Omoda 5, then the family-friendly Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro Max. Now we have the Tiggo 4 Pro, which will be in showrooms in October.

It’s Chery’s smallest and cheapest model in Australia, with prices starting at just $23,990.

That’s cheaper than rivals like the MG ZS, Kia Stonic, Mitsubishi ASX and Great Wall Haval Jolion.

It also significantly undercuts the price of the Mazda CX-3, the segment’s workhorse. With a $3,000 price difference between the flagship Tiggo 4 Pro Ultimate and the base CX-3 Sport, does the Japanese automaker have anything to worry about?

The new Chery Tiggo 4 Pro has landed in the Australian market at an ultra-low price, making it one of the cheapest SUVs in the country.

In top-of-the-range Ultimate spec, the Chery is still $3,000 cheaper than the base CX-3, which currently costs $29,990 as part of a limited-time offer.

Drivetrain and efficiency

From a powertrain perspective, the Chery and Mazda are very different, with little in common other than the number of cylinders.

While both cars have similar peak power, the Tiggo 4 Pro is turbocharged and has an extra 15Nm of peak torque.

Additionally, the CX-3 comes with a standard torque converter automatic transmission, while the Chery has a continuously variable transmission. But which powertrain is better?

Well, the CX-3 engine is significantly more efficient and pollutes less than the Chery engine. These two factors give the Mazda the upper hand here.

aspect

Chery’s new “small” SUV is larger than the CX-3 in every dimension.

This extends to interior space – the Tiggo 4 Pro has 116L of extra boot space, although the Mazda gets more cargo space with the rear seats folded.

Service and Warranty

As Chery has not yet announced a maintenance schedule for the Tiggo 4 Pro, it is difficult to make a judgement on running costs.

However, we do know that Chery offers a longer warranty and provides extended roadside assistance.

Both manufacturers cap service prices for the first seven years.

Safety

Neither car currently has an ANCAP safety rating – the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro has not yet received a safety rating from ANCAP or its European counterpart Euro NCAP, while the Mazda CX-3 also does not have an ANCAP rating as the five-star rating it received in 2015 has now expired.

That being said, the Chery has more advantages in terms of standard active safety and driver-assistance tech.

Compared to the Mazda, the Tiggo 4 Pro comes with features like lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, a surround-view camera, and driver attention monitoring.

The CX-3 has most of the above features, except you’ll need to spend more to get the higher-spec model.

Driving at night or on wet roads can be tricky at the best of times, and the Chery is better equipped to handle such situations with automatic LED headlights, rear fog lights, and rain-sensing wipers.

From a comfort perspective, the base CX-3 also lacks the standard sunroof found on the flagship Tiggo 4 Pro.

Inside the cabins of these two SUV rivals, Chery once again outdoes Mazda on the spec sheet.

While some buyers might prefer cloth upholstery over leatherette, it’s hard to deny that heated, power-adjustable seats and dual-zone climate control aren’t worthwhile upgrades over the basic manual seats and air conditioning in the CX-3.

Chery brings the freshest technology to a segment that often misses out on the latest and greatest.

Compared to the older CX-3, which had an analog speedometer and USB-A socket, the Tiggo 4 Pro has dual 10.25-inch screens and a pair of USB-C sockets.

Would you go with the tried-and-true CX-3, or take a chance with the well-equipped Tiggo 4 Pro?
