Peugeot Australia has released preliminary details of the 2025 (MY25) 408 Fastback Hybrid, which does away with the hybrid powertrain and reduces the price by $10,000 compared to the outgoing plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version.
Due to arrive in the first quarter of next year, 2025 Peugeot 408 GT Fastback Hybrid It will still be a single, high-spec product – with a few extra features added for good measure.
Its price is from $57,990 before tollsa full $10,000 cheaper than the outgoing plug-in hybrid. The PHEV was priced from $67,990 (including on-road prices) before being discontinued earlier this year.
A Peugeot Australia spokesperson confirmed car expert The E-408 is a fully electric version of the high-back fastback and “forms part of our future product considerations for the local market”.
It has not yet been confirmed when the E-408 will arrive in Australia.

Powertrain and efficiency
The 408 is no longer a plug-in hybrid in Australia, with the old 1.6-litre PHEV system having been replaced by the company’s new 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder 48V hybrid drivetrain.

For reference, the upcoming 408 GT Fastback plug-in hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system with a total output of 165kW/360Nm, mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
As well as claiming a combined fuel consumption of just 1.5L/100km when the battery is charged, Peugeot also claims the 408 PHEV can travel up to 60km in EV mode according to WLTP testing.

Peugeot has yet to detail any changes to the 408’s exterior dimensions, but given the significant drivetrain changes, we’d bet there will be a change in curb weight – exact figures are still to be confirmed.

Safety
The Peugeot 408 does not have an ANCAP rating, although sister company Euro NCAP gave it a four-star safety rating in 2022 based on testing of the related 308 Hatch – Euro NCAP said the 408 has “virtually identical” architecture.

In Euro NCAP testing, the 308 achieved an adult occupant protection rating of 76%, a child occupant protection rating of 84%, a vulnerable road user protection rating of 78%, and a safety assist rating of 65%.
Peugeot Australia has detailed a new 360-degree HD camera system for the MY25 408, which includes a forward-facing camera, two side cameras under the wing mirrors and a reversing camera to improve visibility when parking.
