Redesigned CLA blends some cues from EQE and EQS, but it’s a shame for a greenhouse

- The new-generation 2026 Mercedes CLA has less disguise than ever before.
- This four-door coupe has a streamlined design but comes with an awkward greenhouse.
- It will be available with hybrid and electric powertrains as well as front-, rear- and all-wheel drive.
The redesigned Mercedes CLA has been a familiar sight for the past 22 months, but the model is finally entering its sprint phase. Now it’s being celebrated by taking off its clothes and showing some skin.
While both the front and rear ends are heavily camouflaged, the latest prototype has exposed bodywork. It’s instantly familiar, but incorporates a few cues from the EQE and EQS.

The changes are obvious as we can see the streamlined bodywork and flush-mounted door handles. The conservatory has also been completely transformed and looks awkward due to the third quarter of glass extending to the rear door. The result is mismatched lines and an unattractive combination of shapes.
At the end, there are star lighting fixtures that have become a hallmark of modern Mercedes. They are connected by an evolved single-strip grille and new bumper.
The redesigned CLA will debut next year and ride on the new Mercedes modular architecture. The company has revealed a lot of information in recent months and previously confirmed an electric model with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS).
Customers can also choose a 4Matic variant, which adds a 107 hp (80 kW / 109 PS) electric motor at the front. It only has “boost” capability when the motor is engaged when extra power or traction is needed.
We’ll know more about the electric powertrain closer to launch, but Mercedes has confirmed the CLA has an 800-volt electrical architecture and DC fast-charging capability of up to 320 kW. The company also plans to offer an optional 85 kWh silicon oxide battery.
Hybrid and natural gas options available for those who don’t want to
If you’re not a fan of the electric revolution, you can look forward to a new range of four-cylinder petrol engines. Americans will get a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-liter engine, a small battery, and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with an integrated electric motor. The engine produces 188 hp (140 kW / 190 hp), while the electric motor provides an additional 27 hp (20 kW / 27 hp). Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is optional.
