  • The next-generation Nissan GT-R will combine supercar technology with classic Godzilla styling.
  • The R36 will feature advanced digital interfaces and a high-performance hybrid system.
  • The R36 GT-R is expected to be available in late 2027 to compete with the Corvette E-Ray and Porsche 911 Turbo S.

The automotive world is abuzz with speculation as Nissan’s iconic R35 GT-R nears the end of its current generation, which dates back to 2007. So far, the Japanese automaker has been coy about the direction of the new model. However, a series of special edition models suggest that a successor to the GT-R is on the way.

We look at two different possible design directions the R36 GT-R could have taken and explore everything we know about it so far.

Bold design

The aesthetic blueprint for the next-generation GT-R is still being worked out, but it’s expected to prioritize functionality while honoring its heritage with elements like the iconic quad taillights.

Matthew Weaver, Nissan’s vice president of design for Europe, recently admitted in an interview with Top Gear that the R36 will have “elements of Godzilla” regardless of the direction.

“The thing about the GT-R is that it has to excel in every aspect: aerodynamics, speed and performance. These will determine how it performs,” Weaver said.

“The GT-R was never meant to win a beauty contest – it’s a fully functional machine. I remember when developing the last GT-R we spent days and nights in the wind tunnel. I haven’t done anything like that with any other product since. So, there’s no doubt that these factors will determine the look of the next car. In addition to that, we’ll also add certain ‘Godzilla’ elements where possible.”

Our first design proposal draws on the Hyper Force concept car shown at last year’s Japan Motor Show. It takes a softer version of the concept car’s sharp wedge-shaped silhouette and incorporates active aerodynamic components such as canards, front lip, rear spoiler and fender vents.

Our second proposal combines conservative muscle car aesthetics with the design language of the Nissan Epic SUV concept, which debuted at the recent Beijing Auto Show. While it incorporates elements of the Hyper Force Concept, it leans more towards the look of the Z Coupe and other American-made sports cars.

A dizzying prospect

The next-generation Godzilla will reinforce its driver-centric philosophy, with rich ambient lighting and advanced digital interfaces reminiscent of those in the Gran Turismo video game series.

Key features are likely to include an augmented reality heads-up display that seamlessly blends projected digital information across the windshield. To save weight, expect more use of carbon fiber in areas such as the interior and seats.

ICE with electric assist

As with the design, there are many questions about the powertrain. Despite the all-electric Hyper Force Concept boasting 1,341 horsepower (1,000 kilowatts) and featuring e-4ORCE all-wheel control technology, lightweight construction, and solid-state batteries, it seems Nissan will not ditch the internal combustion engine for the R36.

Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan America’s senior vice president and chief planning officer, hinted at a non-EV strategy that could leverage the brand’s Formula E technology. That means a hybrid powertrain, likely paired with the new Infiniti QX80’s 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, blending high performance with greater efficiency.

Competitors and revelations

The next-generation GT-R will re-enter the competitive arena, competing against the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, Porsche 911 Turbo S and BMW M8 Competition. It will also compete against American icons such as the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger Daytona, as well as one or two Italian exotics, each vying for dominance in the high-performance sports car segment.

The next-generation GT-R is expected to debut around 2027 as the 2028MY, and Nissan may unveil one or more concept versions before the official reveal.
