
At the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show, BMW unveiled its cutting-edge Panoramic iDrive system, the latest version of its iDrive technology. Powered by the new Operating System X, the system will be available in all upcoming BMW vehicles starting later this year, replacing many traditional physical controls with tactile buttons and a touch-sensitive interface. BMW’s next-generation panoramic iDrive system: features
BMW’s new iDrive system is built around four key features: a panoramic display at the base of the windshield, a 3D head-up display, a redesigned central touchscreen and an updated multifunction steering wheel. The Surround Vision system acts as a pseudo head-up display, projecting key data onto a black surface located on the lower edge of the windshield. This wide display spans the dashboard, providing important information at driver’s eye level and offering customization options via the central touchscreen. The optional 3D Head-Up Display is located above Panoramic Vision and projects additional information such as navigation and driving system data directly onto the windshield.

The central touchscreen adopts a more angular form, departing from the traditional rectangular shape, and uses matrix backlight technology. The premium German automaker highlighted that the new operating system enhances the user experience by seamlessly transferring content to the Panoramic Vision display with a simple swipe gesture. The new multifunction steering wheel adopts a vertical two-spoke design, which is different from the horizontal layout in current BMW electric vehicles.
Two wing-shaped extensions surround the horn area, which contain controls for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and other in-car functions. The buttons provide tactile feedback, illuminate according to available functions, and have a textured surface for easier identification by touch. The brand has also replaced some physical controls with tactile buttons, including the window de-icer, windshield wiper, volume, exterior mirror, gear select and turn signal buttons.

The updated OS X offers greater customization than earlier systems and supports a wider range of languages for intelligent virtual assistants. This innovative iDrive system will debut in BMW Neue Klasse models, first in the new SUV this year, and later in the new 3 Series in 2026.
