F1: FIA reveals Max Verstappen’s public interest responsibilities

After the season finale in Abu Dhabi, the FIA announced that Max Verstappen’s punishment will be carried out in Rwanda, where the Red Bull driver will attend the FIA Awards Ceremony.

Max Verstappen faces an FIA penalty for swearing during a Singapore Grand Prix press conference, which he will host when he attends the FIA’s annual awards ceremony in Kigali, Rwanda, on December 13 meeting. The Red Bull driver won his fourth Formula One world championship in 2017. A “public interest work” penalty was issued for using vulgar language during the Singapore Grand Prix in September during the 2024 Formula 1 season. In protest, Verstappen gave a brief response at a later press conference, opting to hold his own media briefing outside the paddock. As part of his penalty and championship duties, Verstappen will compete in Rwanda’s grassroots motorsport program organized by the Rwanda Automobile Club. The program focuses on developing young talent using locally made FIA affordable off-road vehicles.

The FIA confirmed that Verstappen’s punishment will involve contributions to grassroots motorsport aimed at supporting junior rivals. The Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC) runs the program to make motorsport more accessible through the use of affordable solutions such as the FIA Economy Off-Road Vehicle.

Despite criticism, Verstappen’s involvement in Rwanda’s grassroots initiative provides an opportunity to positively influence young racing drivers and promote sustainable motorsport. His involvement is in line with the FIA’s goals of promoting inclusivity and developing accessible racing opportunities. By supporting grassroots projects and attracting young talent, Verstappen’s penalty serves as a platform to encourage the next generation of racing drivers while promoting the FIA’s vision for the future of motorsport.
