Despite the lack of direct competition, Sales of conventional gasoline Ford Mustang coupes and convertibles declined in 2024, but were once again surpassed by the electric Mustang Mach-E.
Last year marked the first full year of production for the redesigned 2024 Ford Mustang, codenamed S650, after its launch in mid-2023. Its sales volume was 44,003 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 9.5% in 2023.
Asked about the sales decline, Ford spokesman Mike Levine noted that the automaker encountered supply issues with the Mustang’s 2.3-liter turbo-4 engine in the second half of 2024, causing inventory to be tight during that period.
In comparison, Mustang Mach-E sales increased 26.9% year-on-year. Ford sold 51,745 electric SUVs in 2024, compared with 40,771 units in 2023. While not redesigned, the Mach-E gets some updates for the 2024 model year, including a new rally rating.

This isn’t the first time supply chain issues have slowed sales of gasoline Mustangs. Amid the global chip shortage in 2021, Ford chose to build more electric Mustangs instead of gasoline models, even though gasoline models were selling better at the time. Mach-E sales quickly picked up, though, perhaps helped by Ford’s decision to target higher volumes from the start — something that’s not always the case with electric vehicle rollouts.
The gas-powered Mustang could at least once again outsell its traditional rivals, the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. Both muscle cars will be discontinued in December 2023, but there will still be plenty of inventory on dealer lots through 2024. Challenger sales surpassed Mustang in 2022. Its Charger replacement is now available in electric Daytona form, with a gasoline inline-6 powertrain to follow soon.
