Kia Syros vs Sonet – Specs, features, safety, dimensions

Kia Siros VS Sonet

Even though the Kia Syros and Sonet are of the same size, their exterior and interior packaging are completely unique

Kia India shocked SUV buyers in the country with the launch of Syros. Ahead of the unveiling, the company was tight-lipped about the size of the Syros, with speculation that it would be larger than the Sonet. Although Kia calls the Syros a C-segment SUV, it is a sub-4m product, very close to the Sonet in size.

This may confuse buyers between the two SUVs priced under 4 million. However, Syros has a lot of tricks up its sleeve to differentiate itself from the Sonet. In this article, we compare two of Kia’s sub-4m SUVs to see how they compare to each other in terms of specs, features, safety and size.

Compared to Sonet’s 385L dust cover, Syros offers a 5L larger dust cover in the standard size of 390L. However, higher versions come with sliding and reclining seats that can accommodate luggage to 465L, 80L more than the Sonet’s. Ground clearance of Syros was not disclosed. The Sonet is based on the Hyundai-Kia K2 platform, while the Syros is based on an enhanced version of the Hyundai-Kia K1 platform. Neither the Sonet nor the Syros have been crash tested. Apart from missing the 1.2L Kappa petrol engine, the Syros has the same powertrain options as the Sonet and is in the same state of tune.

Transmission options, on the other hand, are slightly different. Firstly, the Syros is available with a manual gearbox option with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. Also, the Syros does not have iMT options for petrol and diesel engines, whereas the Sonet offers these options. Just like the Sonet, the Syros also has a towing mode on the automatic variant.

Functionality and creature comforts

Compared to the Sonet, this is where the Kia Syros redeems itself the most. First, Syros gets a Level 2 ADAS suite with 16 autonomous functions. Additionally, the Syros comes with a radar-based ADAS system instead of the Sonet’s camera-based system. Syros comes with a panoramic sunroof and a more advanced ambient lighting system. Neither car has rain-sensing wipers.

What differentiates the Syros from the Sonet is the rear seat experience, which offers sliding and reclining seats. The rear seats of the Syros are ventilated. Although it only works on the thighs and not the backrest. Both the Syros and Sonet offer ventilated front seats and a power driver’s seat. In higher variants of the Syros, Kia offers a dual-channel dash cam as standard, which is not seen on the Sonet.
