LACCDesigned by architect Charles Luckmann, it was founded in 1971 and expanded in 1981, 1993, and 1997. It was originally built as a rectangular building at Pico Avenue and 11th Street above Figueroa Street. The northeast portion of the center was demolished in 1997 to make way for the Staples Center.
The conference center annex, made of green glass and a white steel frame, is located primarily on the south side of Pico and was designed by the architects. The area in front of the convention center is known as Gilbert Lindsay Plaza, named after the late city councilman who represented downtown Los Angeles for many years. In 1995, a 10-foot-tall monument was dedicated to commemorate the “Emperor of the Ninth District.” The walkway between Figueroa Street and the Convention Center building is also named for Congressman Lindsay.
