Rs 16,000 crore investment from FY22 to FY27 to drive Mahindra’s electric vehicle ambitions – Mahindra Chakan EV manufacturing facility
Mahindra’s electric vehicle manufacturing and battery assembly plant is located in the company’s Chakan hub in India, covering an area of 2.83 square kilometers. This fully integrated ecosystem is focused on producing the Electric Origin SUV to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles in India. The area dedicated to electric vehicle operations covers an area of 88,000 square meters and is equipped with state-of-the-art automation technology.
An amount of Rs 16,000 crore has been allocated for the development of this facility from FY22 to FY27. Of this, Rs 4,500 crore is earmarked for electric vehicle operations. This investment is a cornerstone of the transition to sustainable and scalable electric vehicle production, laying the foundation for the Indian automotive market.

Industry 4.0 Integration: Strengthening Manufacturing Precision
More than 1,000 robots and multiple automated transfer systems are operating within the facility, increasing operational efficiency and precision. Advanced capabilities such as IoT-based “nerve centers” provide real-time insights into manufacturing processes, ensuring traceability and quality. The integration of Industry 4.0 technologies reinforces its position as a cutting-edge production center.
Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) simplify the movement of materials between manufacturing units. These technologies reduce downtime, enhance safety and optimize workflow, making them an important component of this state-of-the-art facility.

Stamped, painted, perfect: automation in action
A fully automated stamping shop and an AI-powered body shop are the highlights of the manufacturing unit. These parts ensure consistent quality and output accuracy. Robotic paint shops further increase efficiency by automating the painting process and minimizing waste.

Battery assembly is managed on compact production lines designed for lean module production. Patented process, including hidden battery terminal welding and proprietary tray design, ensures insulation and geometric accuracy. Multi-layer testing protocols and real-time temperature monitoring maintain battery reliability.
Chakan’s role in Mahindra COP26 commitments
The facility adheres to strict safety standards, using IP67 entry protection and automatic exception isolation to reduce risk. A no-fault policy ensures that defects are discovered and corrected promptly, maintaining product integrity at every stage.

Sustainability is a core focus, with the plant achieving water-saving status and relying on 100% renewable energy. This is in line with Mahindra’s commitment to the 2030 COP26 targets and highlights the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Electric vehicle manufacturing in India: Bridging EV ambition and execution
The workforce strategy prioritizes inclusion, with a target of 25% gender diversity. Comprehensive skills development programs prepare employees for the advanced technologies being deployed, building expertise and quality in operations.

Mahindra’s Chakan plant represents an important step in India’s electric vehicle journey. Its emphasis on automation, sustainability and workforce development underpins its aggressive pace and policies, paving the way for future growth and innovation.
