  • The second-generation MG5 sedan has received a mid-lifecycle update in China.
  • Visual updates focus on a redesigned front and rear end inspired by the larger MG7 model.
  • The interior features a more traditional layout with a new digital cockpit and fewer buttons.

MG has unveiled a facelifted version of its MG5 sedan in China, five years after the second-generation model was introduced. The exterior design is inspired by the larger MG7, while the interior has also been completely revamped.

The updated MG5 retains the muscular profile of its predecessor, but the front and rear have been redesigned. The new front grille is wider and does away with the black trim that looked like a moustache. MG designers also tweaked the bumper air intakes and made the headlights more aggressive. At the rear, the taillights have been lengthened, and the rear bumper has been given more pronounced fake vents and a body-colored diffuser.

As a result of the facelift, the facelifted MG5 is 40 mm (1.6 in) taller than its predecessor, reaching 4,715 mm (185.6 in) in length. The rest of the dimensions remain unchanged, including the 2,680 mm (105.5 in) wheelbase.

The interior has also been completely revamped, ditching the MG5’s asymmetrical design for a more traditional layout. One of the highlights is the new digital cockpit, which features dual 12.3-inch displays, fewer buttons on the center console, and diamond-shaped chrome air conditioning vents.

There’s no word on any safety upgrades yet, but hopefully the facelifted MG5 will improve on its predecessor’s zero-star rating in ANCAP crash testing.

Under the hood, we find the same 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline powertrain. The base model is equipped with a naturally aspirated engine with an output of 127 hp (95 kW / 129 PS) and is paired with a five-speed manual or CVT. The flagship turbocharged version offers 179 hp (133 kW / 181 PS) and 285 Nm (210 lb-ft) of torque, which is sent to the front axle through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

According to local media reports, the MG5 accounted for half of MG’s sales in China in the first half of 2024, becoming the brand’s core model. However, the sales of sedan competitors such as Changan Eado and Geely Emgrand still far exceeded that of the MG5.

The facelifted MG5 will be officially unveiled on August 30 at the Chengdu Auto Show in China. We expect other markets to follow soon, including Australia, Mexico, Thailand, the Philippines and the Middle East. Note that the UK-spec MG5 EV is unrelated to this, being a rebadged version of the all-electric Roewe Ei5 Estate.
