Mahindra dominates the segment with its Scorpio/N and XUV700 retaining over 77% market share
Mahindra’s Scorpio/N and XUV700 are leaders in the mid-size SUV segment. Both models have an attractive combination of design and performance while also exuding superior technology and are considered to be cost-effective SUVs. Together, these two models occupy the top two positions in the mid-size SUV segment, accounting for 77% of the market share.
Mid-size SUV sales in November 2024
In the previous article, we listed the sales of compact SUVs (4.2-4.4 million units), with 47,890 units sold. The sub-4 meter segment also recorded sales of 1,00,705 units. Conversely, sales in the mid-size SUV category were relatively low, at 28,332 units last month.
In November 2024, mid-size SUV sales decreased slightly by 0.49% year-on-year to 28,332 units. This is down 139 units from November 2023 sales of 28,471 units. The month-on-month decline was even greater, with sales down 16.75% from 34,033 units in October 2024. This is related to the decrease in volume of 5,701 units. Except for the Volkswagen Tiguan, the sales of other models have declined.
The Mahindra Scorpio/N once again tops the sales chart, followed by the XUV700. Despite significant month-on-month sales declines, both models achieved effective year-on-year sales growth. Scorpio/N sold 12,704 units last month, a year-on-year increase of 4.26% from the 12,185 units sold in November 2023. Month-on-month sales fell 18.96% as holiday demand pushed sales to 15,677 units in October 2024.
XUV700 sold 9,100 units in the past month, a year-on-year increase of 26.02% from 7,221 units in November 2023, occupying 32.12% of the market share. Compared with the 10,435 units sold in October 2024, its month-on-month performance fell by 12.79%. Sales will improve with the production of the new XUV700 EV. It will be called the XEV 7e and will be the company’s third electric product, following the BE 6e (now renamed BE6) and the XEV 9e.
Tata Safari, Harrier sales to fall in November 2024
Ranking third on the mid-size SUV sales list in November 2024 is the Hyundai Alcazar. Sales increased 11.55% year-on-year to 2,134 units, an increase of 221 units from 1,913 units in November 2023. The month-on-month sales volume decreased by 3.18% from 2,204 units in October 2024. Both the Tata Harrier and Safari are facing increasing competition in the mid-size SUV segment. Shifts in consumer preferences have shifted attention away from these two once highly successful models.
Tata Safari sales dropped to 1,563 units in November 2024, down 29.18% from 2,207 units sold in November 2023. Its month-on-month sales also dropped 25.07% from the sales volume of 2,086 units in October 2024. Harrier sales also declined year-on-year, with month-on-month growth of 40.93% and 29.43% respectively, by 1,374 units. 2,326 units and 1,947 units were sold in November 2023 and October 2024 respectively.
MG Hector/Plus has also been facing declining sales in recent months. Sales in November 2024 dropped to 1,106 units, a decrease of 48.08% from the 2,130 units sold in November 2023. The month-on-month sales volume decreased by 9.64% from the 1,224 units sold in October 2024. Buyers’ attention now turns to the new MG Windsor. It is the best-selling model in the company’s product portfolio. The mid-size SUV sales list also includes Jeep Compass (188 units), Hyundai Tucson (84 units), Volkswagen Tiguan (79 units) and Citroen C5 Aircross, of which 0 units were sold in the past month.
