Nissan sets Guinness bungee jumping record, but other cars are setting records

  • The new Qashqai falls from the sky under the control of a stunt driver.
  • In 1992, a GMC Jimmy bungee car jumped off an 865-foot bridge in West Virginia.
  • Top Gear also featured a car bungee jumping across a 540-foot-high dam in season 28.

The new Nissan Qashqai has set the Guinness World Record for the highest car bungee jump ever, dropping 213 feet (65 meters) from a crane near several skyscrapers in Puteaux, France. However, despite the Guinness seal of approval, it doesn’t appear to be the highest car bungee jump ever.

Nissan has decided to have the Qashqai e-Power fall from the sky to promote the new model, with the campaign set to air later this month. Nissan said the campaign is designed to evoke the spirit of the Qashqai’s “historic TV advert”.

While we don’t think it’s the smartest idea to throw marketing money at a product like this, the new generation Qashqai is certainly impressive. In fact, we’ve been driving the new model for the past few days (stay tuned for the review). To pull off the stunt, they used a special cage to hold the car in place, with professional racing driver and stuntman Laurent Lasko behind the wheel.

The jump went so smoothly that Guinness officially certified the Qashqai as a new record. However, there have been other famous car bungee jumps in the past, from much higher heights, but they don’t appear to have been certified by Guinness. The organization noted that “both the car and the bungee cord must be intact to be successful.”

The first example occurred in 1992. To promote the new GMC Jimmy, the automaker threw a fully equipped prototype off the New Rover Gorge Bridge in Victor, West Virginia. The car had no driver, but it made a much higher fall than the Qashqai, plunging 865 feet (263.7 meters) from the bridge into the river below.

Top Gear also filmed a car bungee jump in Season 28. In this episode, Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff plunged 540 feet (164 meters) from the top of a dam in a Rover Metro.
