Renault 5 Turbo 3E is an electric super hatchback with over 500

  • Renault went crazy and put the R5 Turbo 3E concept into production with over 500 horsepower.
  • RWD models feature a custom carbon fiber monocoque with twin electric motors.
  • Its design is inspired by the original R5 Turbo from the 1980s, but with modern features.

Renault has unveiled the production version of the 2022 R5 Turbo 3E concept car as a modern successor to the classic R5 Turbo I and II from the 1980s and the Clio V6 from the 00s. The super hatchback rides on a custom platform and features an all-electric RWD powertrain with more than 500 horsepower.

The third iteration of the R5 Turbo homologation special edition features a retro-futuristic style that looks like a redesigned version on steroids. It retains the original’s signature boxy fender flares, although here they’re combined with oversized wheels in extra-wide tires.

The exterior has been changed compared to the concept car, with the addition of a sleeker greenhouse and redesigned aerodynamics. The striking bumpers and side skirts are finished in white, contrasting with the yellow bodywork and black roof.

The LED headlights appear to be modernized versions of the classic R5, while the taillights are from the new R5 E-Tech Electric. The charging port is hidden in a side air intake designed to cool the electric powertrain.

Despite the similarities, the R5 Turbo 3E is not mechanically related to the standard Renault 5 as it rides on a bespoke carbon fiber monocoque chassis that is said to be “both light and extremely strong”.

The French pocket rocket is powered by two electric motors mounted on the rear wheels. With a total output of over 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS), the R5 Turbo 3E is Renault’s most powerful production model and is expected to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.5 seconds.

Groupe Renault CEO Luca de Meo said the R5 Turbo 3E is something “only for the brave”, adding “it’ll be fun”. According to the company, “the Group is bringing its best skills and expertise to the development of this ultimate icon of the Renault brand,” which could hint at Alpine’s involvement in the project.

Renault has not released details on the availability and pricing of the production model, but Autocar reports that the model will go on sale in 2026. Judging by the bespoke nature of the model, we expect it to be available in limited quantities and at a higher price.

The automaker took a look at the R5 Turbo 3E in its “Anatomy of a Throwback” documentary series available on Prime Video. You can watch the unveiling, which took place behind the closed doors of the Design Center, in the video below. The meeting was chaired by Groupe Renault CEO Luca de Meo, Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive and Renault Design Vice President Gilles Vidal.
