For the debut of Volvo’s new electric SUV range, and its signature scent, an ethereal, forest-style event felt like a natural fit.

If you happen to pass by Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Wharf warehouse this June, you might notice something peculiar: the feathery, emerald-green tendrils of dozens of ferns protruding from the building’s red-brick exterior .

This unexpected greenery will be your first clue to the immersive experience that awaits participants: a dreamy Scandinavian forest.

Part of the proceeds from DS & Durga’s Swoodish candles will be donated to Volvo Life Fund partner One Tree Planted.

Upon entering the warehouse, you’ll find pastures filled with wildflowers and tall grass, interspersed with live trees. A curved dining table sits in the center of the room, surrounded by the stars of the car: a lively, stylish XC30, Volvo’s latest and smallest all-electric SUV, and its predecessor, the P1900 (circa 1956).

The whimsical setting served a dual role for more than 140 guests, primarily content creators and lifestyle journalists, launching Volvo’s new all-electric SUV range and launching co-branded limited-edition scented candles created in partnership with DS&. Durga, a Brooklyn-based perfume brand. Named ‘Swoodish’, a play on ‘Swedish’ and ‘Woods’, the candle pays olfactory homage to Volvo’s Scandinavian roots, with woody notes of pine, orris and birch.

Gretchen Saegh-Fleming, Global Head of Marketing at Volvo Cars, said: “We wanted to tell Volvo Cars Scandinavia in a fun and unexpected way to a new audience of consumers. A traditional story.” Working with Gregory Blake Sams Events to design and produce the event, “We also wanted to create the feeling of stepping into a calm and soothing Scandinavian forest within the bustling cityscape of Brooklyn.”

The team also worked with Brooklyn-based Emily Thompson Flowers, with all flowers and greenery sourced locally. In line with Volvo’s mission to drive sustainability, the team composts, recycles or replants flowers and greenery in parks and neighborhoods across New York City.

The Olivier Cheng Catering team found design inspiration from the ambient effects of Volvo EX30 interior lighting and created four different lighting atmospheres for the immersive dining experience: Forest Bath, Midsummer, Northern Lights and Nordic Twilight.
