Royal Enfield dominates the above 500cc motorcycle market with models like Interceptor 650, Continental GT 650, Super Meteor 650 and Shotgun 650
Sales of large motorcycles have always been a fascinating topic in India as buyers are price-conscious. Royal Enfield has taken full advantage of local manufacturing to dominate the market with an attractively priced 650cc portfolio. In July 2024, Royal Enfield topped the list with a 93.36% market share and the same story is repeated.
Sales volume of motorcycles above 500cc in July 2024
Royal Enfield topped the sales charts in the above 500cc segment with its strong 650cc portfolio. With a market share of 93.36% and 3,656 units sold in July 2024, Royal Enfield dominates the above 500cc motorcycle segment. The portfolio includes the Interceptor 650, Continental GT 650, Super Meteor 650 and Shotgun 650.
The top sellers are the 650 Twins (Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650), which sold 2,132 units last month and captured 54.44% of the market share. Year-on-year, the 650 Twins sales increased by 873 units compared to 1,259 units sold last year, a year-on-year growth of 69.34%. In second and third place are the Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 and Shotgun 650, which sold 1,071 and 453 units last month. The Super Meteor 650 is not as popular as the 650 Twins, and it has declined by 32.77% year-on-year compared to 1,593 units sold in July 2023. The Meteor 650 captured 27.35% of the market share, and the Shotgun 650 captured 11.57%.
The fourth position is India’s most popular four-cylinder motorcycle, the Kawasaki Z900, with sales of 71 units. But its popularity seems to have declined compared to last year’s 103 units, a year-on-year decline of 31.07%. Last month, the Dhoom motorcycle Suzuki Hayabusa sold 33 units. Kawasaki sold 23 Ninja ZX-6Rs and 21 ZX-10Rs last month.
Honda sold 18 Transalp XL750s
Following closely behind are the two Ninjas at 6th and 7th place, the Triumph Street with 20 units sold takes the 8th position in the July 2024 500cc+ motorcycle sales chart. From a long period of selling 0 large motorcycles, Honda has come a long way and even made it into the top ten with 18 Transalp XL750s sold last month. The Triumph Tiger 900 sold 11 units, a year-on-year increase of 1,000%, and took the 10th position. In 11th place is the Kawasaki Ninja 650 with 10 units sold. The Triumph Tiger Sport 660 took the 12th position with 7 units sold, but sales fell by half year-on-year, down 53.33% from the 15 units sold last year.

Kawasaki Versys 650 and Honda Goldwing GL1800 sold 6 units each. Only Triumph Bonneville Bobber sold 5 units last month. Kawasaki Z650 and Triumph Trident 660 sold 4 units each. The latter’s sales fell sharply by 80.95% year-on-year. Three motorcycles sold 3 units each – Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster, Bonneville T120 and Speed Twin 900.
Triumph’s Speed Twin 1200, Rocket III and Speed Triple sold 2 units each. At the 1 unit sales mark, we have Triumph’s Street Scrambler, Tiger 1200 and Scrambler 1200 and Kawasaki’s Vulcan 650 and Z650 RS. Surprisingly, Harley-Davidson doesn’t seem to have any sales in July 2024, which is not common.
Other motorcycles with 0 sales were the Kawasaki Versys 1000 and Ninja 1000. A total of 3,916 large motorcycles were sold last month. Compared to the 3,047 units sold last year, sales of motorcycles above 500cc increased by 28.52% year-on-year in July 2024, with an increase of 869 units sold.
