Hackers took control of millions of Kia vehicles using just one piece of software
Thanks to exploits and license plates, bad actors can unlock and launch everything from Forte to EV9 Researchers have discovered a vulnerability that could allow an attacker to gain access to millions of Kia vehicles within 30 seconds. The team created a tool that can be used to remotely lock/unlock a vehicle, start and stop the vehicle, and locate the vehicle. The organization notified Kia of the issue and the vulnerability has since been resolved. Kia Boyz is clearly doing it the hard way, as security researchers recently discovered that millions of cars built after 2013 could be taken over via their license plates. This was a shocking discovery, as the "key" was actually mounted on the rear bumper. Auditing is critical to an export control program as it helps identify gaps in compliance and assess the effectiveness of a company’s export control measures. Auditing should not be viewed as a separate activity but rather as a standard business practice and an integral part of a comprehensive export control program. This is an important process; depending on the size and business of your company, compliance issues can be widespread, involving many people who have never heard of the EAR or ITAR, and who are unaware that their work involves exports. For example, a programmer at a computer services company might have good reasons to share code snippets with programmers at a foreign subsidiary, but this could inadvertently be exporting controlled information. A sales representative might be doing the same thing if he provides a quote to…
Export Control Jurisdiction Overview and
Determining the classification of an item under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) or the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) can be the trickiest part of the entire export process. It can also be the most important part; until you correctly classify the item, you can't be sure if you need an export license. The following is a high-level overview of the process, along with some key points learned through hard-earned experience. It is intended to provide a basic approach to item classification for those just beginning their education in export compliance. To gain insight into this process, the ECTI course “The Ultimate Guide to Classification: Basics, New Advances, and Expert Tips” may be helpful. Terminology and background Before we dive in, let’s get some basic definitions out of the way: Even in the field of international trade,Classification” can mean different things. When we use it, we are specifically referring to determining whether an item is on the United States…
Acura ZDX recalled due to brake failure
The over-the-air software update will be sent today (August 16). August 16, 2024 — Acura ZDX announced a recall of about 5,000 all-electric SUVs because the brakes may fail when the vehicle is traveling less than 25 mph on flat, smooth, dry roads. Today, Acura is sending out a software update over the air for the electronic brake control module for 2024 ZDX A-Spec AWD and 2024 ZDX Type S vehicles. This recall affects all-wheel drive vehicles only. Acura says that if the anti-lock brake system is falsely triggered and a certain sequence of steering wheel movements occurs, the ABS system will continue to release brake pressure from the brake system. According to Acura, ZDX owners will be prompted to install the update via a notification on the center touchscreen after driving the vehicle and shifting it into park. Owners can also choose to install the update later by going into Settings, then Updates & History. However, the ZDX must…
Providing export control guidance to foreign companies and
On Wednesday, March 6, 2024, the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and Justice released another three-in-one compliance note, this time focusing on the obligations of foreign entities to comply with U.S. sanctions and export control laws and recent enforcement actions. This may foreshadow a greater scrutiny of the compliance of foreign companies that we have discussed here. While it’s simple (or not!) to understand how sanctions and export control laws affect U.S. companies, how these laws affect non-U.S. individuals and entities is often more confusing. The note summarizes the various ways in which non-U.S. persons and entities may violate these complex regulations. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) Sanctions While US persons and all persons within the US are subject to US law, including OFAC regulations, non-US persons are also subject to certain OFAC prohibitions. Importantly, the sanctions prohibit non-U.S. persons from causing or conspiring to cause U.S. persons to intentionally or unintentionally violate U.S. sanctions and from engaging in…
Ford recalls 2024 Mustangs over possible control arm fracture
Ford's latest recall involves nearly 4,600 Mustang sports cars. The problem was attributed to a casting defect in the rear suspension knuckle. Ford will inspect and replace the affected parts free of charge to vehicle owners. Suspension components not only contribute to ride comfort, but also to safety. In the case of the suspension knuckle, it is also part of a major joint in the system. Now, 4,595 Ford Mustangs (2024 model years only) may have a component failure. If it fails, it can have dangerous consequences. var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:()}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== "DESKTOP"){ adpushup.triggerAd("4d84e4c9 -9937-4f84-82c0-c94544ee6f2a"); } else{ adpushup.triggerAd("6a782b01-facb-45f3-a88f-ddf1b1f97657"); } }); Specifically, Ford said the rear suspension knuckles of the recalled vehicles could break. The potential problem was apparently caused by a casting defect at the supplier. The debris filter may not have been functioning properly, allowing slag to enter the part cavity. Recall: Fiat 500 tire pressure monitoring system has problems
The Fiat 500 tyre pressure monitoring system warning light may be malfunctioning. June 29, 2024 — A Fiat 500 tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) issue has led to the recall of more than 11,600 vehicles equipped with TPMS warning lights that may not activate properly. Without an illuminated warning light, the driver will not be warned of low tire pressure. Chrysler is recalling certain Fiat 500 vehicles from the 2014 to 2019 model years that require a visit to a dealer to have the tire pressure monitoring system electronic control unit module reprogrammed. "If the vehicle's TPMS sensor values are programmed incorrectly, the warning indicator may not illuminate until the tire pressure drops 1 to 2 PSI below the minimum starting pressure requirement. One configuration placard shows the tire pressure at 38 PSI, so the low tire pressure indicator should illuminate when the tire pressure drops to 28.5 PSI (a 25% pressure drop), but may not illuminate until the pressure…

Ford F-150 transmission downshift recall investigation
Ford F-150 truck owners have been complaining about their trucks' transmissions suddenly downshifting. August 5, 2024 — An investigation into a Ford F-150 downshift problem has concluded, according to a recall of Ford F-150 trucks. The first Ford F-150 downshift recall was issued in September 2016 for 2011 to 2012 trucks equipped with the 6-speed (6R80) automatic transmission. The Ford F-150 downshift recall was due to complaints from owners that the transmission would suddenly downshift to first gear, causing the rear wheels to lock. Ford engineers said the F-150's sudden downshifts were caused by cracks in the transmission's output shaft speed (OSS) sensor's OSS circuit board solder joints, causing intermittent signal loss in the OSS sensor. But in December 2017, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a "recall inquiry" to determine whether repairs had fixed the F-150 downshift problem. Ford subsequently issued a downshift recall for more than 1.2 million trucks. Ford said dealers would reprogram the powertrain control…
