Tata Curvv to get BS6 Stage 2 compliant 1.2-litre inline engine

The Curvv will be Tata’s first model to be powered by a 1.2-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine that produces 123bhp and 225Nm of torque.

Tata Motors has released a new teaser confirming that its upcoming Curvv Coupe SUV will be powered by a new 1.2-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine. Called the Hyperion, the engine is a three-cylinder unit that features an all-aluminium construction and is lighter than the 1.2-litre Revotron turbo petrol engine. It features variable valve timing technology, a variable oil pump and an integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head, and a water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger for better low-end torque.

Compared to the Revotron turbo-petrol engine, the Hyperion produces 123bhp at 5,000rpm and 225Nm of peak torque between 1,700rpm and 3,500rpm. This is 5bhp more power and 55Nm more torque than what the Revotron produced. In addition, the new engine is said to be more refined and more fuel efficient, both of which the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine could not achieve. The latter will be equipped on lower-spec models of the Coupe SUV.

The Hyperion, which makes its debut on the Tata Curvv, will comply with Bharat Stage 6 Phase-II emission norms while supporting E20 fuel. Transmission options include six-speed manual and seven-speed DCT gearboxes. In addition to the Hyperion and Revotron engines, the Curvv will also come with a 1.5-litre diesel engine option. The 1.2-litre Revotron turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel are already offered with the Nexon.

Tata Curvv: India Launch Details

Tata will launch the Curvv SUV in India on August 7, 2024. The Nexon-based Curvv will be Tata’s first mass-market Curvv Coupe SUV for India. We expect the company to launch the electric version of this SUV first, followed by the petrol and diesel versions. Based on Tata’s second-generation acti.ev architecture, the Curvv EV will be available in two battery options with a range of 450 – 550 km on a single charge. A CNG option is also expected in the future.
