Global sales of the Volkswagen brand in 2024 will be 4.8 million vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 1.4%. While the overall decline is modest, it highlights the growing challenges posed by increased competition and changing market demands. Among them, pure electric vehicle sales were 383,100 units, a year-on-year decrease of 2.7%. This is an unwelcome result for a company that is working hard to strengthen its electric vehicle business.

In 2024, China will remain Volkswagen’s largest market, with 2.2 million vehicles delivered, accounting for nearly 46% of total sales. However, this figure dropped by 8.3% from 2023 as the competitive advantage of local brands increased. In Europe, Volkswagen maintained its market lead with sales of 1.25 million units, albeit down slightly by 1.7%.

Globally, the Tiguan is Volkswagen’s best-selling model in 2024, followed by the smaller T-Roc, which will enter a new generation in 2025. The SUV will account for 47% of Volkswagen’s global deliveries in 2024, which explains why the automaker continues to expand its lineup of high-riding models.

As for electric vehicles, deliveries in 2024 were 383,100 units, a decrease of 2.7% compared with 393,700 units in 2023. Last year’s suspension of sales of the Volkswagen ID.4 was undoubtedly one of the reasons for the decline, as it led to a 55% reduction in deliveries of electric SUVs in the U.S. market.

Martin Sander, Volkswagen Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After-Sales Service, said: “Globally, 2024 is a difficult year, with low economic activity, political challenges and fierce competition – especially in China. However, we are Start the new year with optimism. Not only do we have attractive products, we also meet the needs of various customer segments with a broad and diverse model range covering all drive types.”

In the coming weeks, we expect 2024 sales figures for the entire Volkswagen Group, which is expected to remain the world’s second-largest automaker after Toyota.
