Sometimes V8 engines go down in history even if they aren’t great to drive. On the other hand, cars with bad sounding engines rarely become legends. Which brings us to our question today. Which V8 engine sounds the worst?
var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:()}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){ adpushup.triggerAd(“4d84e4c9 -9937-4f84-82c0-c94544ee6f2a”); } else{ adpushup.triggerAd(“6a782b01-facb-45f3-a88f-ddf1b1f97657”); } });
It’s easy to look at some models in the everyday family SUV category as clear winners. For example, a mid-2000s Chevrolet Tahoe with a 5.3-liter V8 might not provide the kind of grunt one would expect or want from a small engine. Even if we focus entirely on performance-focused vehicles, the list would probably be long.

The video below is a good example of where this whole conversation might be headed. BMW X7 M60i xDrive. Under the hood is a 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces 523 horsepower (390 kilowatts) and 553 pound-feet (748 Newton-meters) of torque. That’s more than the E60 M5, Mercedes E55 AMG, and just under the original BMW X5 M. Meanwhile, the X7 M60i xDrive sounds terrible.

Why is this happening? It’s certainly not the engine. The same twin-turbo V8 is installed in a number of different BMWs, including the M850i xDrive, and it sounds great. That means it can’t be entirely the turbocharger’s fault, either. The noise could be down to a number of factors, including the turbochargers and the purpose of the three-row SUV. It’s probably not the worst of it, though.
This lack of honor may have something to do with the distant past. Don’t forget that during the oil crisis, countless V8s on historic muscle car nameplates were nowhere near as powerful as a modern Toyota Camry. That said, they didn’t have throaty V8 noises either, which is why they’re probably the worst. Still, maybe we’re missing a big or crucial engine.
