- Porsche has produced some of the most impressive cars in its 75-year history.
- Models such as the 911 series embody the brand’s blend of luxury, performance and design.
- Porsche innovations range from the humble 356 to the advanced 918 Spyder.
Porsche’s place in the automotive world can perhaps not be overstated, especially when it comes to sports cars and racing cars. No, it wasn’t the first carmaker, it wasn’t the first to win a major race, and it’s not the most exclusive brand. Still, in a history that spans more than seven decades, it has developed some very special cars. Today, it’s up to you to pick which of those models is the best.
The 911 is the clear frontrunner, but the question quickly becomes, which one? The two models in our main image could easily battle it out at the top of the list. The original 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was a homologation special that was renowned for being the fastest street-legal car in Germany at the time. It gave rise to the Porsche RS family as we know it today.

That includes the car next to it in the photo, a modern 911 GT3 RS that’s a great example of how far the brand has come since the ’70s. It produces 518 horsepower (525 PS) and can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. It’s a modern monster, but these two cars wouldn’t exist without their common ancestor.
We’re talking about the Porsche 356, a car that wasn’t particularly fast when it went into production, but that soon changed. By 1951, it had won its class at Le Mans. In the years since, it’s become a huge hit in Hollywood and around the world. Of course, the right choice for the “greatest Porsche of all time” probably has to be the one that was born on the racetrack.

There’s no doubt that the 917 is one to watch. It was the first Porsche to win at Le Mans and went on to dominate in various racing series around the world. The automaker split the main 917 design into eight different variants. It would dominate the Can-Am series in the United States and win the European Interserie Championship six years in a row. And of course, it starred in the 1971 classic with Steve McQueen. Le Mansarguably one of the most iconic racing movies (if not the most iconic).
In the early 1980s, Porsche decided to enter the World Rally Championship and began developing a car for this purpose, which was initially called Gruppe B. According to FIA regulations, 200 cars had to be produced to meet street racing requirements to be eligible to participate in the competition, and the 959 was born.
When it was launched in 1986, it became the fastest production car in the world, with a top speed of 197 mph (339 km/h), thanks to its 444 hp (450 PS) twin-turbocharged flat-six engine and advanced aerodynamics. It was a technological masterpiece for its time, with all-wheel drive, automatic ride-height adjustment suspension and sequential turbochargers.
Unfortunately, the FIA banned Porsche’s Group B cars after a series of fatal accidents, so the 959 did not compete in the WRC, but it did win the 1986 Paris-Dakar Rally.

But perhaps the right choice is the Carrera GT. With its racing technology, like its motorsport-derived V10, it is perhaps the last true analogue supercar in history. And, while most people don’t think it’s easy to drive, it’s the car that many car tycoons love.
