For those who haven’t heard of it, Shriners International is a global fraternity of about 200,000 people known for its parades and philanthropic efforts. The organization dates back to 1872, and since its founding, it has been guided by the principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth. Some of the organization’s main work is in health care for children.
you return You may not know this, but there were 12 Oldsmobiles built specifically for Shriners International in 1974. One of them has been owned by the same family for the past 45 years. We are pleased to bring attention to that car now. It is being sold by a dealer in Waconia, Minnesota; the auction ends on Friday, September 6th.
It’s no surprise that such a unique car was featured as a parade model throughout its lifespan. Even its color, Shriners Burgundy (code SPEC), was exclusive to a limited run of just a dozen.
Like many cars of the 1970s, the Delta 88 was known for being large and heavy when it was first introduced. In fact, promotional materials called the car a “tough nut.” During pre-production testing, the car’s chassis was reportedly splashed with salt water, the driver’s seat was pounded thousands of times, and the engine was tested for 100,000 miles (and then disassembled for inspection).
This generation of the 88 took shape in 1971, sharing the GM B-body platform with the Buick LeSabre, Chevrolet Caprice and Pontiac Bonneville. Like every other car on the American market at the time, 1974 was a year of design changes, including a government-mandated 5 mph bumper.
The car is reportedly powered by a 180-horsepower 350ci Rocket V8 engine mated to a THM400 three-speed automatic transmission. The dealer claims the car’s stated 28,466 miles are genuine.
This Delta 88 Royale checks a lot of boxes for Oldsmobile enthusiasts: it’s an unmodified, low-mileage, limited-production car with special provenance through its association with a global charity. By bidding today, you can help write the next chapter in this car’s story.
