when the time comes In 1987, Motor Trend magazine named it Import Car of the Year, and the winner was the all-new Acura Legend coupe. It was praised by the magazine for its handling, construction and styling, beating out 12 other finalists to take top honors.
This 1991 Acura Legend L Coupe appeared on AutoHunter, an online auction platform operated by ClassicCars.com. The car is being sold by a dealer in Highland Park, New Jersey, and the auction will end on Tuesday.
The AutoHunter was launched about a month after the 1994 Legend GS sedan was sold on the same platform. Incidentally, the car was eventually purchased by an Acura enthusiast in Virginia who had already made some improvements to it. The new owners plan to attend next year’s National Legends Gathering. Maybe the lucky buyer of this car will show up there too?
The Legend was a key component in American Honda’s bold decision to launch the Acura division in the mid-1980s. It is the Acura brand’s flagship product and has been available in both coupe and sedan forms for both generations. The second-generation car featured a sleek body, more power and improved comfort.
Today’s featured car’s Charcoal Granite Metallic paint complements the tinted windows, contrasting pinstriping, decklid spoiler and fenders. The ivory (F-Type) leather interior performs well and the only thing that seems to have changed compared to factory equipment is the Sony stereo. The Legend coupe had some unique features for the time, including soft-closing doors and a power rear window.
1991 Legend’s press release states: “In the new Legend, engineers worked hard to raise the already high standard of quality: designing panels for more precise production, reducing gaps, improving interior and exterior finishes, and increasing durability.”
In 1991, engineers worked hard to raise performance standards. With that in mind, power comes from a 3.2-liter “Type I” V6 rated at 202 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. This reflects an increase of more than 40 horsepower over the outgoing first-generation Legend. The listing says the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs and drive belt have been replaced. According to CARFAX, the injectors were also replaced in December. In total, the car will come with $5,500 worth of service records, so buyers can drive away with peace of mind.
“The Legend coupe was inspired by many things,” said a 1991 magazine ad. “Other car companies are not among them.”
If you’ve ever longed for a legend, there’s a lot to like about this one. CARFAX report shows long-term Texas ownership, accident-free history, and extensive recent maintenance. Make your bid today!
