— A 2014 Ford F-150 downshift problem has led to the recall of more than 647,000 trucks, which can cause the trucks to suddenly downshift to first gear while in motion, regardless of speed.
In the United States, the 2014 Ford F-150 downshift problem has resulted in more than 300 warranty reports, 96 field reports and 124 customer complaints.
The downshift problem also caused nearly 100 2014 Ford F-150 trucks to experience rear wheel locking and dangerous control issues.
Additionally, there were two reports of injuries resulting from sudden downshifts and one complaint that the issue caused a collision.
“A loss of signal between the transmission output shaft speed sensor and the powertrain control module may cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift to first gear, regardless of vehicle speed.” – Ford
The 2014 Ford F-150 downshift problem triggered a series of actions by Ford and the government.
Ford F-150 downshift issues led to a 2016 recall, which led to a federal investigation, and then Ford F-150s were recalled in 2019 for downshift issues.
But Ford announced another recall in 2019 due to F-150 downshift issues.
About three months ago, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened another investigation, this time specifically looking at the 2014 Ford F-150 downshift issue.
About 95,000 of the recalled trucks are located in Canada.
Owners of 2014 Ford F-150 trucks should be on the lookout for a downshift recall in early July 2024. Ford dealers will update the powertrain control module software.
