autoX Awards 2024: The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z has no standout qualities that set it apart, giving it a jack-of-all-trades feel, but its price is its most notable highlight.
2024 autoX Awards: The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z is one of the latest entrants in the 400cc sports bike segment in India and arguably, it offers the best value for money. Launched at a price of Rs 1.83 lakh (ex-showroom), the Pulsar NS400Z is a powerful, feature-packed motorcycle for the masses. On our first ride, we were impressed with its grunt, design, and functionality. However, there are no standout qualities that set it apart and give it a jack-of-all-trades feel, and its price is its most notable highlight. Our judging panel at the Buddh International Circuit provided the perfect setting to see how the NS400Z stacked up against its direct competitors. So, how does it stack up against the competition?
Honestly, BIC has so many big-name performance bikes to test, and the Pulsar NS400Z was one of the last bikes I got the keys to. Once I did, however, I found the Pulsar to be a surprisingly sporty riding machine, despite the modest numbers on its spec sheet. It is powered by a Dominar-sourced 373cc single-cylinder engine, which in the NS400Z produces 40bhp and 35Nm of peak torque. However, what really sets it apart is its ability to deliver 85 per cent of torque (approximately 35Nm) from as low as 3,500rpm. This means strong off-the-line performance and a torque curve that remains flat throughout the rev range, delivering progressive and predictable surges in power and acceleration.

Compared with Dominar, the overall length of NS400Z is shorter and the front angle is sharper, which brings a light and agile feeling and can be ridden comfortably in various scenarios. While it doesn’t offer the same track-focused sharpness as its KTM cousins, it’s pretty much in sync with other naked motorcycles in the segment. But the NS400Z’s main drawback on the track is its softer suspension setup, which makes it a more comfortable machine for daily riding.
