2024 autoX Awards: Launched in 2017, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe is the first domestic model in the series. The second-generation GLC 43 SUV-Coupe is based on the C43 sedan with significant changes. The most significant change is the switch from a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine to a more compact 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electronic turbocharger. In addition, the exterior design has been refreshed and the interior layout has also been revamped. So, as an AMG SUV, does it have the ability to impress the jury?
Before we delve into the driving experience, let’s look at the numbers. Like the C43 sedan, the new GLC 43 Coupe is powered by a 2.0-liter engine producing 420 hp and 500 Nm of torque, with a 48V mild-hybrid electric motor activated under load boosting a further 14 hp and 150 Nm of torque. The GLC 43 Coupe’s electric turbocharger solves the problem of massive turbo lag when accelerating. It also effectively masks the fact that this is a fairly heavy vehicle.

The electric turbo ensures the engine stays in the powerband during gear changes and rolling acceleration, producing an almost addictive surge of power from the moment you step on the accelerator until it reaches 7,000rpm. While turbo lag is almost non-existent in more suitable driving modes, where the electric motor keeps the turbo spinning at high speed, it can be felt when accelerating in Comfort mode.
Although the GLC 43 Coupe may be more challenging due to its weight and power, it offers a unique treat. When you drive hard, the GLC 43 Coupe exhibits more drama than the C43 AMG. With noticeable body roll, it clearly lets you know when you’re going fast and behaves enthusiastically when changing directions quickly. All this without sitting too low to the ground, providing a uniquely fast SUV driving experience. Add to that the benefits of four-wheel steering and torque vectoring, and you get an SUV that’s just 3 seconds slower than a Ferrari at the Buddha International Circuit!
