2024 autoX Awards: Of all the vehicles available in the country, the Mini is widely recognized for its X-factor and driving pleasure. However, Mini India is now aiming to improve efficiency with the launch of the Countryman EV. This model is aimed directly at enthusiasts and strives to be a truly all-around SUV.

In India, the electric Mini Countryman is only available in a single-motor version. The motor produces 204 horsepower and 250Nm of torque. When you floor the accelerator, the Countryman accelerates smoothly and linearly, with a steady, progressive rush displayed on the speedometer. While it may not be the fastest car on the road, I would describe its performance as “brisk.” Mini India’s claimed 0 to 100km/h time of 8.6 seconds accurately reflects the way it drives. It’s not fast enough to overwhelm beginners, but it does provide an enjoyable experience.

The Countryman EV offers what Mini calls “experiences,” but only three of them – Core Experience, Efficiency Experience and Go-Kart Experience – really make an impact on the car’s driving dynamics. Core offers the best balance between performance and efficiency; Kart enhances steering and throttle response, and is efficient…well, that’s self-explanatory, isn’t it? Despite the sacrifice in battery capacity, the kart still delivers the fastest, most lively driving experience.

The Countryman EV’s 66.45kWh battery pack is said to be capable of driving 462 kilometers on a single charge. Under real-world conditions, our test drive had a range of about 380 kilometers, which in my opinion is not bad. While the Countryman EV isn’t the fastest car we’ve owned, it handles very well for its size and weight, although the same cannot be said for the performance of the motor. While it doesn’t feel fast, it can negotiate corners effortlessly. The steering is very responsive, although it does feel a bit artificially weighted. All in all, the Mini Countryman EV is probably the most practical and well-rounded Mini family car, combining efficiency, handling and the brand’s signature driving fun into an attractive package.
