2024 autoX Awards: Yamaha’s twin-cylinder siblings, the YZF-R3 and MT-03, both earned spots as “Best of 2024” contenders. While I had high expectations for the R3 (you can read about that elsewhere in this issue), I had low expectations for the MT-03. Unlike the iconic R3, the MT-03 may not be widely recognized among Indian motorcycle enthusiasts yet, but the name “MT” carries some street cred, thanks to the popular MT-15, which has been Known as one of the most popular motorcycles. The most capable 150cc street naked bike in the country.

The MT-03’s 321cc liquid-cooled twin-cylinder engine (also used in the R3) provides it with a powerful starting point. Power delivery is smooth, with plenty of torque in the lower rev range. However, to get a truly exciting performance, you need to work on making it exciting. At first glance, the bike looks well built, but doesn’t feel entirely modern as it’s missing standard features for the segment, such as a TFT display, traction control, riding modes and a quick-shifter. Benchmark bikes, like the KTM 390 Duke, offer. The design is also a bit understated in my opinion.

Beyond that, Yamaha also offers a nearly identical bike with a fairing, but at a slightly higher price, making it a more attractive option for some riders.

The MT-03’s saving grace, however, is its ride and handling. On the track it’s very forgiving, allowing you to make mistakes, while on the street it guarantees a decent level of comfort – perhaps even better than its handsome siblings. The hefty price tag does make it harder to justify, but if you can look past that, you’ll find a motorcycle that has all the basic features and provides an enjoyable riding experience. Additionally, the Yamaha badge brings a sense of reliability that further adds to the value of the package.
