2025 Jaecoo J7: China’s latest Toyota RAV4 rival revealed

Chery-owned Jaecoo is one step closer to entering Australia, with its mid-sized petrol SUV already appearing on local roads.

This Jaecoo J7 appeared in Brisbane, just months before customer deliveries start in the first quarter of 2025 (January to March).

It looks like this example is a petrol-only version, rather than a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), although both are expected to be available at the same time.

While Australian pricing and most specifications are yet to be confirmed, Jaecoo has confirmed the mid-size J7 will be available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a seven-cylinder unit. It produces 137kW of power and 275Nm of torque, slightly lower than the 145kW and 290Nm offered in the Chinese market.

The J7 PHEV, meanwhile, pairs a 115kW/220Nm turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a 150kW electric motor for its plug-in hybrid system (SHS called Super Hybrid System), which produces 255kW and 525Nm of total power.

The automaker claims that the J7 PHEV has a pure electric driving range of up to 90 kilometers on the WLTP cycle and a combined driving range of up to 1,200 kilometers.

The length, width and height of the J7 are 4500 mm, 1865 mm and 1680 mm respectively, with a wheelbase of 2672 mm, which is about 100 mm shorter and 10 mm wider than the Toyota RAV4.

Jaecoo has only confirmed a small set of features for Australia so far, including:

While parent company Chery is relaunching more affordable cars in Australia in 2022, Jaecoo’s SUV will be positioned at a higher price point.
