Last year, the South African market revealed the Toyota Fortuner MHEV (a mild hybrid vehicle). The variant will also be introduced in other growing markets, including India. While there is no official news on the Indian release schedule, media reports suggest that its market is expected to arrive later this year.
2025 Toyota Fortuner MHEV- Technical explanation
The Fortuner’s mild hybrid car has a 2.8L diesel engine and is equipped with a mild 48V hybrid system. This setup provides a combined power of 201BHP and 500nm of torque, including an additional 16bhp and 42nm mild hybrid system. The gentle hybrid system consists of three main components: a DC-DC converter, a 48V battery and a belt-driven generator that replaces the conventional alternator in the engine.

Toyota claims that the mild hybrid version of the SUV is expected to be 5% higher than the standard Fortuner (Diesel). It comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission, as well as 2WD and 4WD drivetrain system options. The mild hybrid version of the SUV also allegedly provides improved throttle response and a smoother engine restart thanks to its new idle start point stop feature.
New Representative Toyota Fortuner India Release?
The Japanese automaker may launch a new generation by the end of this year. A mild hybrid system can be introduced with this generation update. The new SUV model will also offer a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with a variety of tune states – 300bhp, 400nm, 400bhp, 549nm and 600bhp.
Rumors are that a new petrol engine may replace the existing 2.8L diesel engine. However, it is not clear which version of the turbocharged petrol engine powers the new Indian-spec Toyota Fortuner.
The new SUV model may also come with a Toyota security ADA (Advanced Driver Assistance System) and a 360-degree camera. Existing electric assisted steering can also be replaced by hydraulic units.
