- Like the GR Yaris, the larger GR Corolla is now available with six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions.
- Toyota engineers also modified the 1.6-liter engine, boosting torque from 273 lb-ft to 295 lb-ft.
- Optimizations have also been made to improve cooling and handling.
We knew it was coming, and now it’s here; the updated 2025 Toyota GR Corolla. As recent rumors suggested, the most significant update is the inclusion of an 8-speed automatic transmission, a move that should help broaden the appeal of this punchy hot hatchback.
The eight-speed gearbox is called the Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT), and it’s the same gearbox that joined the GR Yaris range earlier this year. One key difference between this gearbox and the ones in the GR Supra and GR 86 is that instead of shifting based on deceleration g-forces and speed, the DAT senses brake and throttle inputs to make perfect shifts.

Interestingly, the transmission has very similar ratios to the standard six-speed manual and comes with a dedicated cooler to keep everything in tip-top shape. Toyota will also offer a sub-radiator on the Premium model for additional cooling, as standard on the Premium Plus model.
Other upgrades have been made to improve performance. The most obvious is a torque increase from 273 lb-ft to 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), while retaining the 300 horsepower of the 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. Launch control is also standard on DAT models, although Toyota has not yet revealed how quickly it will accelerate to 60 mph (90 km/h).
Toyota engineers also optimized the hatchback’s handling. New rebound springs were added to both the front and rear suspension to reduce inner wheel lift, while the rear coilovers and stabilizers were optimized. The trailing arm mounting points were also moved to reduce squat under acceleration.
Some modest visual changes were also made, including a redesigned front bumper for improved cooling. This new fascia features large brake ducts, while air curtains have been added to draw air from the tops of the tires. The interior is largely the same, but does have new trim pieces.
Three versions will be sold in the U.S.: GR Corolla Core, GR Corolla Premium and GR Corolla Premium Plus. Key features exclusive to the Premium Plus include a forged carbon fiber roof, custom hood, sub-radiator, matte black wheels, head-up display and GR-branded Suede seats. Pricing details have not yet been announced.
