Mazda’s CX-5 is about to undergo a major and much-needed redesign, and if you’ve been waiting for something fresh with the Toyota Rav4 with the Toe-Toe, which will also make a new generation debut soon, it might be the update you’d like to be. Almost nine years after the second-generation CX-5 was recently discovered, the prototype of the compact SUV has been discovered, cruising around Los Angeles, browsing the store for the first time. Here’s everything we’ve known so far before the redesigned CX-5 made its official debut.
A unique familiarity, but new

Mazda’s Kodo design language is constantly evolving, and the upcoming CX-5 is a great example. The new model blends rugged elegance with movement, especially in the front, where the winged inner grille is inlaid with side-layered headlights and stacked DRL clusters.
While most of the profile retains the familiar ones, notable changes include thick D-pillar and upper-wheel arches that extend to the fenders, adding a stronger, off-road-inspired edge. As typical of Mazda’s design spirit, the body still has no harsh creases, giving it a high-end feel that has been elegant over time.

In the back, Mazda’s new “Letterhead” script was first seen on the recently revisited Mazda EZ6/6E, replacing the traditional logo we all know. The taillights take clues from the larger CX-90, creating a cohesive design language in Mazda’s SUV lineup.
Technical forward, spacious interior

Inside, expect a cottage that is both high-quality and spacious. Rumors are that the dashboard has a rectangular dashboard and infotainment display, similar to the tablet-style screens found in current BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi products.
Rear passengers will benefit from a higher roofline, providing improved clearance, while cargo space will increase as well.
Key features may include Amazon Alexa voice command integration, a panoramic sunroof and Mazda’s driver personalization system, which for the first time was in higher trim units in the CX-60. The system allows the SUV to adjust settings such as seat position, climate control, and mirrors to adjust individual driver profiles.
Mixed Power-Finally!
Under the hood, a new parallel hybrid system allows the wheels to be driven only by electric motors, electric power and internal combustion engines (ICEs) or by ice only. In terms of layout, fresh patented images from Japan reveal the transverse four-cylinder engine, paired with the electric motor on the right, with the transmission between the two clamped to the right.

The Mazda is tilted to retain its naturally aspirated 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G petrol engine and the current car’s turbocharged 2.5-liter unit. Starting in 2027, Mazda’s new SkyActiv-Z powertrain will air with advances in thermal efficiency and fuel economy.
Below, the CX-5 will share the rigid “small platform” of the carmaker with the Mazda 3 and CX-30. Both front and all-wheel drive configurations will continue to be available.
Competitors and reveal
The new generation of CX-5 will face fierce competition in the crowded SUV market, with Toyota Rav4, Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forrest, Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue/X-Trail, Mitsubishi Outlanderlander, Mitsubishi Outlander and Volkswagen Tiguan.
Official disclosure will occur in the next few months. In fact, Mazda’s South African division accidentally sprinkled beans, indicating that the new CX-5 will debut globally sometime between July and September, with a 2026 model vehicle launch in the U.S.
How do you view the redesign of the CX-5? Will this new look and hybrid powertrain let you ditch your current ride, or will it still be doubtful? Give up your thoughts in the comments below – we would love to hear what you think.
