2026 Mercedes CLA debuts with up to 792 km EV series, hybrid engine options

Mercedes-Benz offers a new chapter for its entry-level CLA, which features a completely redesigned model for 2026. While the appearance retains a familiar look, the update under the skin marks a big shift, especially with the introduction of an all-electric variant. As the brand moves towards electrification, the latest CLA offers a mild hybrid and fully electric powertrain that eliminates the option of diesel engines.

aspect

Compared to its predecessor, the 2026 CLA has grown in size. The body has extended 33 mm, bringing its length to 4722 mm, longer than the previous generation C-class. The width has been increased by one inch to 1854 mm, and the total height has been increased by 28 mm to 1468 mm. The wheelbase is also extended with 61 mm, and now the dimensions are 2789 mm.

Cargo space has also dropped slightly, with the suitcase offering 405 liters of storage – 54 liters less than before. However, the all-electric version compensates with the front torso or “Frunk”, providing an additional 71 liters of storage. It is worth noting that this is the first modern Mercedes to adopt a front torso in nearly 90 years.

design

Visually, the 2026 CLA adopts an evolution rather than a revolutionary approach. Smooth light bars with front and rear functions are in line with modern design trends, while flush door handles help with smoother profiles. Despite its coupe-like silhouette, the CLA is still a traditional sedan with a trunk instead of a lift. Its aerodynamic efficiency is also noteworthy, with the most simplified version having a drag coefficient of only 0.21.

Inside, the cabin undergoes a major transformation. Three screens dominate, and the dashboard features a 10.25-inch dashboard and a standard 14-inch infotainment display. The optional 14-inch passenger screen enhances the digital experience, forming what Mercedes calls the Mbux SuperScreen. It can also be used as an option to provide a head display with a projected 12.2-inch image. The burly sound system with 16-bit speakers further exacerbates the cabin’s premium feel, while the panoramic sunroof on all models can utilize covered hot laminated glass to reduce glare.

In terms of climate control, the new CLA also deviates from its predecessor. Physical climate buttons have been replaced by touch screen-operated controls, an increasingly common trend in modern vehicles. Meanwhile, the center console features a floating design with an integrated cup holder, wireless charging pad and additional storage space underneath.

Suspension and engine

The foundation that supports the 2026 CLA is a new multi-chain rear suspension that originates from a high-end Mercedes model that promises to improve ride quality. Wheel sizes range from 17 to 19 inches, further affecting comfort and handling.

The gasoline-powered version of the CLA has a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The engine is paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system and an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Mercedes has confirmed two different power outputs of the engine, although certain numbers have not been disclosed yet. Buyers will choose between front and all-wheel drive.

For those who choose electric drivetrains, the CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4matic variants offer different levels of performance. The CLA 250+ has a rear-wheel drive setup with a single electric motor that produces 268 hp and 335 nm of torque. The CLA 350 4Matic, equipped with a dual-sport all-wheel drive system, adds output to 349 hp and 515 nm of torque. The rear-mounted two-speed gearbox is designed to optimize performance, first catering to urban driving and second gear to improve highway efficiency.

Performance figures show that the base electric CLA can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr in 6.7 seconds, while the dual-sport version implements Sprint in 4.9 seconds. The electronic limit maximum speed for both models is 210 km/hr. It is worth noting that the all-wheel drive variant operates in front-wheel drive mode under normal conditions to maximize efficiency, allowing the front motor to attract the front wheels only when additional traction is required.

Battery and charging

The electric CLA is equipped with an 85 kWh nickel-type deck battery pack, providing a considerable driving range. Under WLTP cycles, rear-wheel drive models can run 792 kilometers per charge, while the all-wheel drive variant achieves up to 771 km. With the 800 volt construction, the electric vehicle supports DC charge in an impressive 325 kW, allowing it to obtain a range of 325 km in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions.

Later this year, Mercedes plans to introduce a more affordable electric CLA with a 58 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing an alternative to current chemical reactions.

India will launch a new generation of Mercedes CLA later this year.
