2026 Toyota RAV4: Here’s our first look at what’s next

  • Spy photos of the next-generation Toyota RAV4 have surfaced online.
  • The prototype received significant updates, blending new styling with familiar proportions.
  • The revamped RAV4 is expected to debut in 2025, retaining its TNGA-K platform.

The Toyota RAV4, the world’s second-best-selling car after the Tesla Model Y, is getting ready to enter a new chapter. The new generation is expected to launch in 2025, but so far there’s been little evidence of prototypes hitting the road. Now, that’s changed with the emergence of spy photos that may reveal this extensively redesigned SUV, and while details remain hidden, there’s still a lot to reveal.

The photos appeared on a number of online forums and social media channels, including cochespi and Otto Parellishowing off a heavily camouflaged prototype. Although it maintains the size of the current RAV4, it clearly adopts Toyota’s latest design language. The images are said to have been shot in North America and Japan, providing multiple perspectives that enhance the credibility of their authenticity – although as always, a degree of skepticism is advised.

Sophisticated yet familiar silhouette

The prototype appears to retain the boxy wheel arches and familiar proportions of the current-generation RAV4, with pillars, mirrors and door handles appearing to be in the same position. However, the front end has been completely redesigned, with hammerhead LED headlights echoing Toyota’s recent bZ4x, Crown Family, Prius and newly launched Camry models.

In addition to the headlights, there’s a body-colored grille – a feature increasingly common on Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Below this is a bumper air intake, likely constructed of plastic cladding to maintain the SUV’s rugged stance. Other notable differences from the outgoing RAV4 include a subtly tweaked beltline that angles upward and rearward, as well as a redesigned rear end with sleeker, slimmer taillights.

Different versions of the fifth generation Toyota RAV4

Digital cockpit meets familiar platform

Inside, the sixth-generation RAV4 is expected to feature Toyota’s latest digital cockpit, including dual 12.3-inch displays in high-spec trim. Taking design cues from the new Camry, the dashboard will likely feature better screen integration, higher-quality materials and state-of-the-art connectivity.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:()}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){ adpushup.triggerAd(“bb7964e9 -07de-4b06-a83e-ead35079d53c”); } else { adpushup.triggerAd(“9b1169d9-7a89-4971-a77f-1397f7588751”);

If this sounds more like an extensive facelift than a complete overhaul, that’s because the new RAV4 is expected to retain the outgoing model’s TNGA-K platform. Toyota took a similar approach with the new Camry, directing its resources toward enhancing key aspects rather than opting for a costly redesign.

This approach reflects Toyota’s strategy with the new Camry – focus on improvements rather than expensive overhauls. While the architecture remains the same, performance, efficiency and comfort are expected to continue to improve. Petrol, self-charging hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains will return, with rumors suggesting an all-electric version could join the line-up. However, Toyota remains tight-lipped about its confirmation of electric vehicles.

“Don’t fix what isn’t broken”

Toyota executives hinted at a cautious approach, saying the RAV4 redesign will preserve the formula that made the current model a huge success. why not? The soon-to-be-launched RAV4 has become a global car brand, with sales exceeding 1 million units annually. In 2022, it became the world’s best-selling passenger car, and in 2023, its sales were second only to Tesla’s Model Y. U.S. sales are expected to reach 500,000 units this year, and the RAV4 is clearly the cornerstone of Toyota’s product line.

When can we see it?

Toyota has kept the launch date tightly under wraps, but a global launch in mid-to-late 2025 seems feasible, and would be just in time for the 2026 model year. Japanese buyers may have to wait longer for the new generation model, at least according to speculation in local media. Last week, Toyota gave the existing RAV4 in Japan a slight update, with the biggest change being the omission of front-wheel-drive trim.
