- The sixth-generation Supra will reportedly be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
- The new powertrain developed by Toyota can be paired with a hybrid system.
- Toyota has confirmed it is developing a new Supra, but has yet to set a launch date.
Production of the fifth-generation Toyota GR Supra is nearing its end, with the souped-up A90 Final Edition marking the end of its relatively short five-year life cycle. But don’t panic, because Toyota has confirmed that a successor is in development, and the latest rumors suggest it will feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, likely paired with a hybrid powertrain.
From electric dreams to mixed reality
Initially, the sixth-generation Supra was expected to be all-electric, but Toyota’s “multipath” strategy appears to have taken center stage. Last year, reports surfaced that Toyota would offer both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) powertrains. Other rumors also point to a BMW-sourced engine that is reportedly designed to be compatible with carbon-neutral fuels.

Now, according to Japan best carIt seems most likely that the next-generation Supra will be powered entirely by a Toyota-developed powertrain, with no BMW parts in sight. The upcoming turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, due out in May 2024, could play a key role, especially if combined with some form of electrification to boost output while maintaining fuel economy and emissions controls.
Turbocharging and electrification
The newly developed 2.0-liter engine is likely to find a home under the hood of the reborn eighth-generation Toyota Celica, with its high-performance configuration expected to produce up to 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS) and 500 Nm of torque. of torque without electrification (369 lb-ft).
The addition of a hybrid system could push the performance envelope even further, potentially exceeding the 429 hp (320 kW / 435 PS) of the current turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine in the A90 Final Edition. However, it may not match the aural appeal or tuning potential of BMW’s acclaimed inline-six.
Importantly, this engine is designed with future-proofing in mind as it is compatible with electrification and carbon-neutral fuels, providing Toyota engineers with flexibility based on regional regulations and market needs. A racing version of this engine can even produce an astonishing 592 hp (441 kW / 600 hp), underscoring the Supra’s racing potential.
Transfer options
The self-charging hybrid system is said to consist of an electric motor-generator and clutch located between the engine and transmission. As for transmission options, the latest rumors suggest an eight- or 10-speed automatic may be in the works, although Toyota has also been experimenting with a simulated manual gearbox to make up for the lack of a traditional stick shift – yes, we know, it is Too bad.

What’s certain is that the next-gen GR Supra will remain a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) vehicle, while the reborn Celica will likely opt for an all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup.
Chassis and design: refreshed
In addition to the development of the hybrid system, Toyota will also have full control over the new GR Supra’s exterior styling and chassis tuning. Early renderings suggest an evolved design that retains much of the current model’s aesthetics but features sharper lines, more aggressive proportions and a more dynamic overall stance.
