Tata Harrier, Safari SUV
The updated Tata Harrier and Safari, launched last year, are among the safest cars in India, according to Global NCAP. The adult protection score was 33.05 points (out of 34 points), the child occupant protection score was 45 points (out of 49 points), and the overall safety rating was 5 stars. Notably, these SUVs scored a perfect 5-star rating in the first round of the Bharat NCAP crash test.

Both models come with a 2.0-liter diesel engine and a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. This setup produces 168bhp of maximum power and 350Nm of peak torque.
These SUVs come with a host of safety features including up to 7 airbags, Level 2 ADAS technology with 17 functions, ABS with EBD, ESP, cruise control, driver attention alert and hill descent control.
The Tata Harrier starts at Rs 14.99 lakh and goes up to Rs 25.89 lakh, while the Safari retails in the range of Rs 15.49 lakh to Rs 26.79 lakh. Prices are ex-showroom, India.
Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia
The Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia are popular compact cars in India and receive a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP. In 2023 safety testing, the cars scored 29.71 points (out of a possible 34 points) for adult occupant protection and 42 points (out of a possible 49 points) for child occupant protection.
The mid-size sedan comes with numerous safety features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Multi-Collision Braking (MCB), Highway Alert, Rear Parking Sensors with Camera, TPMS and up to six airbags . They can be powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine or a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. Virtus is priced between Rs 10.90 lakh and Rs 19.41 lakh. On the other hand, the Slavia price starts at Rs 10.69 lakh and goes up to Rs 18.69 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom.
Tata Nexon
Nexon is one of the safest cars in India and has achieved an excellent 5-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests. The SUV scored 44.52 points (out of 49 points) for child protection and 32.22 points (out of 34 points) for adult protection.
For passenger safety, the Nexon comes equipped with features such as 360-degree camera with blind spot monitor, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), automatic headlights with rain-sensing wipers , and ABS with EBD. It is available with a choice of two engines: a 1.5-litre diesel and a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol. The turbo-petrol engine produces 118 hp and 170 Nm of power, while the diesel engine produces 260 Nm and 113 hp. The SUV is priced between Rs 800,000 and Rs 15.50 lakh. Both are ex-showroom figures.

The new-generation Verna, launched in India last year, received a 5-star overall safety rating from Global NCAP. It scored 42 points (out of 49 points) for child occupant safety and 28.18 points (out of 34 points) for adult occupant protection.
As for safety, Hyundai models come standard with electronic stability control (ESC) and six airbags. However, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which offer approximately 17 Level 2 ADAS functions, are only available in selected models.
The sedan is offered with two engine options: a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated (NA) engine and a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine. The NA engine produces 113bhp and 144Nm, while the turbo-petrol version produces 158bhp and 253Nm. Prices for the model start at Rs 11 lakh and go up to Rs 17.42 lakh (all prices ex-showroom).
Mahindra Scorpio-N
Mahindra Scorpio-N is acclaimed for its eye-catching design, powerful performance and superior safety features. It stands out in the Indian SUV segment with a 5-star rating (29.25/34) for adult occupant protection and a 3-star rating (28.93/49) for child occupant protection from Global NCAP.

The SUV comes with up to six airbags, front and rear cameras, hill assist control, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). It is available in a choice of two engines (2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol) and in 6- and 7-seat configurations. In India, the Mahindra SUV is priced between Rs 13.85 lakh and Rs 24.54 lakh (ex-showroom).
