63,000 Jeep Cherokees recalled due to possible rollover or loss

  • Jeep is recalling more than 63,000 Cherokees due to a power transmission problem.
  • Some do not have a fully secured input shaft snap ring, which can cause damage over time.
  • When things finally go bad, the vehicle may roll around or lose drive when parked.

The Jeep Cherokee may have been discontinued, but that doesn’t mean the recalls have stopped. On the contrary, 63,082 vehicles were recalled due to potential loss of driving power.

The power transmission in 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokees may be damaged, according to the government. If this occurs, it could “disconnect the transmission and differential, resulting in loss of drive power and/or loss of parking capabilities.”

While only 2% of people are believed to be affected, some Cherokees may have an input shaft snap ring that is not fully seated. This can cause “uncontrolled movement” of the shaft, ultimately leading to wear, spline damage, and fork damage. If this happens, you will be “split” as your Jeep may roll over or lose the ability to accelerate.

This is a recall as Jeep originally recalled the 2014-2017 Cherokee due to potential input spline failure in 2020. About three years later, in March 2023, the company began investigating 2016 and 2017 Cherokees for potential input spline failures. A month later, they decided to conduct a recall.

Things didn’t end there, as the automaker launched an investigation into the 2017-2019 Cherokee last June. This found “14 customer assistance records, 1,064 warranty claims, 43 field reports and 55 other service records potentially related to this issue across all markets, with receipt dates ranging from May 10, 2017 to April 2024 17. “That’s a sizable number, but the company hasn’t seen any injuries or incidents.

Unfortunately, the owners are left in limbo as the remedy is still under development. Notices are expected to be mailed next month, but in the meantime, owners may want to be aware of any strange noises, vibrations, or changes in drive quality.

In related news, Mopar is recalling 6,979 power transmission units due to the same issue. These were also made by American Axle & Manufacturing and have not yet been restored.
