730HP Alpine Alpenglow Hydrogen V6 concept car could be a production supercar
  • The new Alpine Alpenglow HY6 is the follow-up to the HY4 rolling prototype.
  • The biggest upgrade is the 730-horsepower hydrogen-fueled twin-turbo V6 engine.
  • Alpine wants hydrogen-powered race car to enter 24 Hours of Le Mans

Alpine continues to develop its hydrogen-powered concepts with the Alpenglow HY6, which debuted in Paris. The latest evolution of the supercar features an all-new hydrogen V6 powertrain that’s twice as powerful as its predecessor’s HY4 four-cylinder engine, while also offering slightly more refined looks.

The concept car has its sights set on future participation in endurance racing, but a series production version is also considered a possibility.

First up is the all-new powertrain, a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 developed by Alpine that delivers an impressive 730 hp (544 kW / 740 PS) and 770 Nm (568 lb-ft) of torque. The engine has four chain-driven overhead camshafts with 4 valves per cylinder and runs exclusively on hydrogen. The fuel is stored in gaseous form in three 2.1 kg (4.6 lb) high-pressure hydrogen tanks. Power is transmitted to the rear axle via a six-speed sequential Xtrac gearbox.

In addition to the new hydrogen heart, the Alpenglow HY6 also gets some styling updates for a more refined look. Notable changes include additional air intakes on the bonnet, as well as a redesigned rear deck with a transparent hood and more traditional rear fenders.

The body is made entirely of carbon fiber and is 5.20 m (204.7 inches) long, creating bizarre proportions. The French supercar retains its predecessor’s wraparound greenhouse, futuristic lightning bolts and transparent blades that make it look like a Le Mans racer from the future.

These motorsport references are no accident, as Alpine has urged the FIA to authorize hydrogen-powered racing cars to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2028. Additionally, while the concept is described as a “rolling laboratory” with an eye on racing, Alpine has also hinted at a possible production version.

More specifically, the company admitted that “the development concept initially favors a version designed for racing, but could be converted to series production.” In a similar vein, Alpine’s chief designer recently said that the brand had been designing the Alpenglow with a production version in mind.

The company didn’t elaborate on the underpinnings of the Alpenglow HY6, saying only that it has “various modifications and technical enhancements.” The concept is likely to ride on a Ligier LMP3 chassis version of the Alpenglow HY4 rolling prototype that debuted in May 2024. Note that the original Alpenglow concept, which debuted two years ago at the 2022 Paris Motor Show, was a static show vehicle.
