Norway continues to lead the way in electric vehicle adoption, with electric cars accounting for a record 94% of new car sales in the country in August.

While many other markets are seeing slowing growth in electric vehicle sales, with market penetration rates in the single digits or just over 10%, Norwegians are buying electric vehicles in record numbers. In August, 10,480 electric vehicles were registered nationwide, and about 68,435 of the 78,832 electric vehicles sold nationwide this year have been sold. That equates to an 87% share.

The Tesla Model Y was the country’s best-selling car last month, with 2,107 units sold, or 19% of total sales. It was followed by the Volvo EX30, which sold 932 units, or 8.4% of total sales. Other popular electric cars in Norway include the Skoda Enyaq (720 units), the Volkswagen ID.4 (584 units), the Toyota bZ4X (526 units), the Audi Q4 e-tron (369 units), and the Tesla Model 3 (367 units sold). Rounding out the top ten were the Volkswagen ID.3, the BMW i4, and the Nissan Ariya.

“No country in the world is going through a race to electric vehicles like Norway is currently experiencing,” said Oyvind Solberg Thorsen, director of the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Board. “If this trend continues, we will soon be able to achieve our goal of 100% zero-emission vehicles by 2025.”

A key reason electric cars are so popular in Norway is the incentives. People who buy or lease an electric car are exempt from emissions tax and value-added tax. They can also enjoy a reduction of at least 50% on road tax and tolls, and in some areas, lower parking fees.

News of Norway’s surge in electric car sales comes shortly after it was revealed that EU electric car sales fell 10.8% in July.
