Czinger 21C has taken back the Laguna Seca title

  • In 2021, Czinger set the lap record at Laguna Seca for the first time, but on August 18 of this year, the Koenigsegg Jesko Attack car broke the record.
  • The Californian company let Koenigsegg hold the record for just eight days.
  • The 21C is 0.11 seconds quicker than the Jesko, thanks to its hybrid high-revving V8 engine and aerodynamic design.

Czinger reclaimed the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca production car lap record from Koenigsegg, lapped the track in just 1:24.75 in the 21C supercar.

The American manufacturer first won at Laguna Seca in 2021, when it set a lap time of 1:25.44 with Joel Miller at the wheel. The record stood for three years until August 18 of this year, when Koenigsegg sent a Jesko Attack to the track and recorded a time of 1:24.86. Rather than let his Swedish rival bask in the glory of that record, Czinger returned to the track on August 26 and shaved 11 seconds off the Jesko’s benchmark.

The Czinger 21C that set the new record is one of the most dramatic examples we’ve seen. It’s finished in a green carbon fiber that the small company calls “Rattesnake,” and it’s the same car that was shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. While Czinger is still a small company, the quality of the woven carbon fiber looks outstanding and contrasts nicely with the many bright red accents.

One of the key factors in the 21C’s extraordinary performance is the engine. Rather than sourcing engines from other companies, Czinger developed the supercar’s powertrain in-house, allowing it to customize a 2.88-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with a flat-plane crankshaft. This V8 engine revs to an eye-watering 11,000 rpm and produces 950 horsepower. A pair of electric motors provide additional power, allowing the car to produce 1,233 horsepower in standard configuration and up to 1,333 horsepower with an optional power upgrade.

This track-focused weapon is also very light by modern standards, with a dry weight of just under 2,733 lbs (1,240 kg). Watching it whiz around some of Laguna Seca’s high-speed corners was a treat, and it didn’t seem to suffer any loss of traction, save for the occasional bout of mild understeer.

Will Koenigsegg let Czinger hold the record for long, or will it look to retake it with the Jesko Attack? We’ll just have to wait and see.
