  • The new software will be loaded onto existing infotainment systems via an over-the-air update.
  • Volvo says the XC90’s upgraded system makes important functions easier to access.
  • Models equipped with the Android operating system produced as early as 2020 will receive the update.

Few things signify the age of a modern car more than an old-school infotainment system, but if you own a Volvo built after 2020, you’ll soon be able to enjoy the company’s latest generation of software, which debuted with the facelifted XC90.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:()}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){ adpushup.triggerAd(“4d84e4c9 -9937-4f84-82c0-c94544ee6f2a”); } else{ adpushup.triggerAd(“6a782b01-facb-45f3-a88f-ddf1b1f97657”); } });

While much of the new software will be familiar to existing Volvo owners, some key changes have been made. For example, the most commonly used apps and controls have been relocated to the home screen, just like Volvo’s electric vehicles. This reduces the number of clicks required to access important features like Google Maps and smartphone media.

There’s also a new bar at the bottom that shows the owner’s recently used apps and a switch to turn on the exterior cameras at any time. The new software debuted with the XC90’s enlarged 11.2-inch freestanding touchscreen, and while older models won’t feature this larger screen, the software has been adapted to different screen sizes and shapes.

window._taboola = window._taboola || (); _taboola.push({ mode: ‘thumbnails-a-mid’, container: ‘taboola-mid-article’, placement: ‘Mid Article’, target_type: ‘mix’ } );

window._taboola = window._taboola || (); _taboola.push({ mode: ‘thumbnails-oc-2×1’, container: ‘taboola-mid-article-thumbnails-organic’, placement: ‘Article mid thumbnail organic’, target_type: ‘mix’ });

Around 2.5 million Volvo owners will get the new software next year. It will be introduced to all models using the Android operating system developed as early as 2020, including the C40, XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, XC60, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country and XC90. The system will be available via an over-the-air update for free.

“Our next-generation UX will significantly improve the customer experience and is an important step in our journey to deliver human-centric technology solutions to our customers,” said Erik Severinsson, chief product and strategy officer at Volvo Cars. “We will continue to seamlessly adapt the UX to our customers’ needs with new features and enhancements delivered over-the-air (OTA) updates, improving your car and experience over time.”
