- Volvo is exiting the subscription business on both sides of the Atlantic.
- In the United States, Care by Volvo quietly terminated the service on August 1.
- The service promises flexibility and requires no long-term commitment.
Car subscriptions have been hailed as the next big thing, and some offerings are so appealing because you can easily swap vehicles, meaning you can buy a crossover in the winter and a convertible in the summer.

The automaker didn’t reveal why it decided to drop the subscription service, but Russell Datz, national media relations manager for Volvo Cars USA, told the publication that the move allowed them to “focus on our core customer service and upcoming new products, (as well as) improving operational efficiencies.” Volvo also left the door open for a possible return, as subscriptions are only paused for the “foreseeable future.”
The Swedish brand has largely removed mention of the program, but we found a support page in April that touted the program as flexible and without long-term commitment. It also noted that the subscription includes a monthly allowance of 1,250 miles (2,012 kilometers), insurance, and maintenance.
While many subscription programs have been canceled due to low usage, Care by Volvo is reportedly profitable in the U.S. Some dealers are also fond of the program, with one telling the newspaper that subscriptions account for 10% of its business and are a good way to introduce customers to the brand.
