Skoda Slavia and Kushaq 1.5 manual models discontinued, only DSG available
In a move that may come as a surprise to car enthusiasts, Skoda has discontinued the manual transmission version of the 1.5L EVO TSI engine in the Slavia and Kushaq. This move restricts buyers who prefer the performance-oriented 1.5L engine to the automatic DSG option.
Skoda’s India 2.0 strategy shift
Built on the MQB A0 IN platform, both the Slavia and Kushaq have played a key role in Skoda’s growth in India under the Skoda India 2.0 strategy. These two models, along with Volkswagen’s Taigun and Virtus, allow buyers to experience modern design and advanced engineering tailored for the Indian market. Known for its power output of 148 BHP and 250 Nm of peak torque, the 1.5L EVO TSI engine has always been a popular choice among enthusiasts looking for a more thrilling driving experience.
However, Skoda’s decision to remove the manual transmission option for this engine has sparked mixed reactions. Manual transmissions are often favored by purists who like to have more control over the performance of their vehicle. With this change, the 7-speed DSG becomes the only transmission option for the 1.5L engine, while the 1.0L TSI engine continues to be available in both manual and automatic versions.
Impact on buyers and market dynamics
The move may force some potential buyers to reconsider their choices, as the automatic DSG models are more expensive. Customers who want a manual transmission paired with a powerful 1.5L engine may now gravitate towards Volkswagen’s Virtus or Taigun, which still offer the 1.5L EVO TSI MT combination.
Skoda’s decision could have a significant impact on its sales figures, especially compared to VW, which had higher monthly sales in August 2024, around 3,600 units compared to Skoda’s 2,800. Discontinuing popular configurations could help VW further increase its market share, especially among buyers seeking a combination of economy and performance.
Looking Ahead: New Releases for the Holiday Season
Despite this shift, Skoda remains optimistic about its prospects in the Indian market. The recently launched Slavia Monte Carlo and Sportline editions are expected to attract new buyers during the upcoming festive season. However, the absence of the 1.5L EVO TSI MT option in both the versions suggests that Skoda intends to focus on its automatic offerings.
For those who are still interested in a manual gearbox, the 1.0L TSI engine produces 114 BHP and 178 Nm of torque and is offered with both manual and automatic gearbox options.
Skoda’s discontinuation of the 1.5L EVO TSI manual transmission on the Slavia and Kushaq is a strategic move that could have both positive and negative consequences. While the move is in line with the global trend towards automatic transmissions, it could alienate a section of driving enthusiasts who value the practical feel of a manual transmission. However, with the launch of the new version and continued availability of the 1.0L TSI engine, Skoda remains committed to offering a range of choices to Indian buyers.
