This Classic Mustang Is Actually a BMW E92 M3
  • The Mustang is based on the E92 BMW M3, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at it.
  • Inside, you’ll find a mix of E92 components mixed with vintage Mustang parts.
  • It is powered by the S65 4.0-liter V8 engine and six-speed manual transmission.

From a distance, this car may look like a well-maintained, near-original 1960s Ford Mustang. The proportions are very accurate, it has all the classic body panels that made Mustangs of this era so iconic, and even the interior looks very authentic. However, despite its Mustang-like appearance, this isn’t a Ford at all – it’s actually an E92-generation BMW M3.

Already on sale in Cape Town, South Africa, this unique M3 combines two iconic rear-wheel drive sports cars. We don’t know why the BMW’s body was removed and replaced with the skin of a classic Mustang, but we have to applaud whoever built this car because they seem to have done a fantastic job.

Under the skin, this is a standard E92 M3. That means it’s powered by the brand’s S65 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. As the only generation M3 to feature a V8 engine, the E92 holds a special place in the hearts of many tuning enthusiasts and provides a truly addictive soundtrack.

The body is a faithful reproduction of the classic Ford Mustang GT500. Bright blue paint makes the car stand out, as does a set of beautiful silver wheels. First spotted by Carbuzz, the car is now listed for sale via Cars.co.za, and while it hasn’t been revealed what material the new body is made of, it has the same alluring shapes, curves and creases as the original pony car.

A lot of work has been done inside the cabin. A custom dash, new gauges and a vintage three-spoke steering wheel with a wood rim enhance the retro Mustang vibe. Traces of the M3 remain, however, with parts such as the climate control switchgear and gearbox tunnel lifted directly from the BMW.

The listing shows the car has only been driven 3,745 kilometers (2,327 miles). However, it’s unclear if this is the V8’s total mileage, or how far the car has traveled since the modification. Regardless, the asking price is ZAR 1,799,995, or just under $104,000.

This M3 Mustang costume is certainly a conversation starter, although the discussion may revolve more around the “why” than the “wow.” At this price, it feels like an expensive way to grab attention. A quick look at the listings on South African Cars shows that for that price you can buy an original 1969 Mustang (SAR 1.1 million/$64,300) and a proper E92 M3 (SAR 599,000 /$35,000)—all without requiring an additional existential crisis.
