Lexus’ flagship SUV now features a self-charging hybrid unit and new rugged trim

- The Lexus LX 700h is equipped with a V6 engine, electric motor generator and waterproof battery.
- Off-road performance is guaranteed even in the event of hybrid system failure.
- The LX also gets technology and chassis upgrades that improve comfort and ride quality.
The LX is the only Lexus model without an electrification option. Now, that’s changed, with the Lexus LX 700h launching a new parallel hybrid system built around a V6 engine with a focus on “reliability, durability and off-road performance.” The flagship SUV also benefits from chassis, safety suite and interior upgrades.
The new hybrid combines a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine with a clutched electric-motor generator mounted between the engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Lexus doesn’t specify the LX 700h’s power output, but the Toyota Tundra iFORCE MAX produces 437 hp (326 kW / 443 PS) and 790 Nm (583 lb-ft) of torque from a similar setup. The same powertrain is likely to appear in the mechanically related Toyota Land Cruiser Series 300.

At 2,780 kilograms (6,129 pounds), the LX 700h hybrid is 120 kilograms (265 pounds) heavier than the non-electric LX 600. The electric SUV is equipped with an alternator and starter, which means that if the hybrid system fails, the four-wheel drive will continue to operate. The same applies to the low-range transfer case, ride height adjustment (Active Height Control) and Active Traction Control, ensuring off-road performance is not compromised.
A high voltage battery pack of unknown capacity was found in the rear floor area, beneath the cargo bay, next to the relocated 12V auxiliary battery. It is housed in a waterproof tray with a water sensor and allows a wading depth of 700 mm (27.6 inches). In addition, the waterproof AC inverter can provide up to 1,500 W or 2,400 W of external power (depending on the region) through multiple outlets.
Lexus engineers also upgraded the LX’s GA-F architecture. Redesigned cab-mounted saddles reduce low-frequency vibrations, and changes to the AVS system and Lo transfer case contribute to a more refined ride.
Additional brackets and reinforced radiators on the dash help improve steering feel. Finally, the LX 700h benefits from a new crossmember and upgraded rear engine mounts, making up for the extra weight.
Overtrail version and technology upgrades
Compared with other powertrain versions, this hybrid SUV does not bring any appearance changes, except that it retains the LX 700h logo on the tailgate. However, come 2025, the Lexus LX will follow the GX and smaller NX in getting the Overtrail treatment.
The off-road-focused trim features matte gray aluminum wheels shod with all-terrain tires (265/70R18), a first for the LX. The exterior features a unique Moon Desert hue that combines a black grille and dark exterior trim. Inside, the Overtrail combines a desaturated overall interior with ash burl black trim. What’s more, the special edition comes with front and rear differential locks, as well as a center differential lock that comes standard on all trims.
All Lexus LX models feature a new 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and an upgraded wireless charging pad to support faster charging. In addition, VIP and Executive trims feature new “refreshed seats” for the driver and front passenger, offering five massage programs of varying intensity (two full-body massages and three targeted area massages). The large SUV also features the latest version of Lexus Safety System+ with several improvements.
The Lexus LX 700h will be launched in phases in various regions starting from the end of 2024.
