james bond movies The series officially began with 1962’s Dr. No. By 1964, it had hit several major milestones. That year, Goldfinger was released, a film that’s a regular on lists of the best James Bond films of all time. Not only did it feature a unique henchman (Oddjob), a wealthy villain with an iconic name (Auric Goldfinger), and an over-the-top plot (irradiating the gold at Fort Knox to multiply the value of Goldfinger’s stock), but it also featured the first true “Bond car.” Yes, 007 drove different cars in the first two films, but none of them had the looks of an Aston Martin DB5, or—most importantly—the gadgets (unless you count the car phone in Bond’s Bentley in From Russia With Love). This year is 60.day This year marks the 100th anniversary of the release of Goldfinger. To mark the occasion, Aston Martin has opened a 007-style pop-up store in London.
On any given day, you can buy watches, jewellery, leather goods, shoes, cashmere and more from 47 brands in London’s Burlington Arcade. If you happen to be there between July 18 and August 4, look for Aston Martin’s House of Q (often referred to as House 12-13). Unlike the secret agent we know and love, it should be easy to find.
Once inside, you’ll see what looks like a magazine rack. Don’t be fooled; it’s actually the cover of a secret door that leads to a speakeasy serving Bollinger champagne.
As you sip your glass and listen to music from the Bowers & Wilkins sound system, you’ll be surrounded by technical drawings and parts from the original DB5, designed by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera and powered by a 4.0-litre I6 engine, which was launched in September 1963. There will also be “sketches, diagrams and schematics from the Aston Martin and EON Productions archives” on display, as well as the original Goldfinger script, film posters and set photography. If you happen to find a flight case in there, you’ll have a hint of future Aston Martin models.
For those with gold ingots, a configuration lab and design experts will be on hand to help you design your next Aston Martin. Just don’t expect machine guns behind the headlights, pop-up tire shredders, or ejection seats.
