Mahindra recently launched the BE 6e and XEV 9e electric SUVs on November 26, 2024, as part of its ‘Electric Origin’ product portfolio. Positioned as a key player in Mahindra’s foray into advanced electric vehicles, the vehicles are designed on the company’s INGLO platform to be innovative and sustainable. However, the name BE 6e has triggered a trademark issue raised by IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation Limited.
It’s 6e Trademark dispute clarification
Mahindra’s BE 6e trademark application under Class 12 (Vehicles) has been opposed by InterGlobe Aviation, which claimed that its registered trademark “6E” is widely recognized in the aviation sector and may therefore constitute infringement. The airline claimed that Mahindra’s BE 6e could create confusion and dilute its brand image.
However, Mahindra has clarified its stance. In a recent statement, the company emphasized that its trademark is different from that of IndiGo. Mahindra explained that the ‘BE 6e’ refers to the specific vehicle and not the standalone ‘6E’ used by airlines. This difference in purpose and design eliminates the possibility of confusion between electric SUVs and aviation services.
Continuous discussion of solutions
Acknowledging the airline’s concerns, Mahindra said the company’s intention was not to encroach on IndiGo’s goodwill. Discussions are ongoing between the two parties to reach an amicable solution. Mahindra stressed its willingness to resolve issues while ensuring the continuation of its electric vehicle strategy.
BE 6e: Part of Mahindra’s electric vehicle strategy
The BE 6e is a central part of Mahindra’s bold foray into electric mobility and embodies the company’s vision of ‘Infinite India’. Launched alongside the XEV 9e, the BE 6e emphasizes futuristic design, sustainability and advanced technology. Built on the INGLO platform, these SUVs feature modular design, remote capabilities and cutting-edge infotainment systems.
Industry impact
Trademark disputes between industries, especially those involving widely differing products, often highlight the complexity of intellectual property rights in a globalized market. The ongoing discussions between Mahindra and InterGlobe Aviation reflect efforts to balance brand focus with innovation.
