After seeing these images of a BMW X5 being sliced ​​in half by a speeding train in Bulgaria, you might think the story ended in tragedy, with multiple people killed. Incredibly, despite the driver of the German SUV crashing directly into the path of the train at the intersection, he managed to escape uninjured. This outcome feels almost impossible, given the enormous forces involved in such a collision.

The incident occurred near the village of Ravnopol earlier this week. CCTV footage shows the driver of a white X5 approaching a railway crossing, seemingly unaware – or blatantly ignoring – that the boom gate had been lowered and red lights flashing to warn of an oncoming train. Moments later, the X5 drives directly onto the train tracks, and the video is cut off, sparing viewers any subsequent confusion.

Photos shared online by local media showed the aftermath of the collision. The BMW was split in half as the train pushed it to a nearby station. The rear end can be seen centered on the platform, while the X5’s front end is pushed further along the track. Nearly all the windows appeared to be smashed and much of the SUV’s body was crushed.

Amazingly, the 23-year-old driver escaped the collision without suffering any serious injuries. However, if there are passengers in the back seat, they likely won’t be so lucky. The impact of the train left the rear of the vehicle completely exposed, a sobering reminder that the accident could have been much more serious.

Similar incidents happen around the world and are almost always avoidable. Drivers need to remember that no matter how rushed, it is never worth risking their own lives or the lives of others trying to catch a train. When it comes to these collisions, there’s no debate.
