The Heritage Award for Innovation and Inspiration was presented to Philip Anschutz on November 21 at the Historic Hotel’s annual meeting in Hot Springs, Virginia. His innovative stewardship included entrusting two of the iconic legendary historic resorts he owned—the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs and Sea Island Resort in Georgia—to 100-year trusts that would have barred them be sold and ensure their future stability. These Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond resorts are rich in history, tradition, service and excellence.
Additionally, the award recognizes Anschutz’s company, The Anschutz Corp., headquartered in Denver, for investing more than $100 million to restore the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak cog railway, which first opened in 1891 and took passengers Climb to the top of 14,115-foot Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs.
