Mercedes-Benz G 580 electric SUV launched in India, priced

Mercedes-Benz India has launched the new G 580 priced at Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom). The carmaker has also announced the prices of the EQS 450 (5-seater), which is priced at Rs 1.28 crore (ex-showroom). Bookings for the new G-Class began in July last year, and deliveries are expected to begin soon. One of its standout features is the ability to perform a 360-degree turn on the spot, a maneuver the brand calls a “tank turn.” The EV retains the iconic boxy shape and dimensions of the classic G-Class, with only minor design updates. The most notable change is at the front, where a closed fascia replaces the usual grille, keeping in line with the design language of the brand’s other electric models.

Customers can opt for an EQ-style grille with illuminated edges and black headlight surrounds. There’s also an updated bumper as well as a roof-mounted spoiler. The side profile remains largely unchanged, save for a set of newly designed alloy wheels. At the rear, the electric G-Class continues to feature a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, although Mercedes-Benz offers the option of replacing it with a square storage bin designed for charging cables.

Mercedes-Benz G 580: battery, range and charging

Mechanically, the G 580 comes with a four-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup where each wheel is powered by a separate electric motor. The total output power reaches 579bhp and the peak torque reaches 1,164Nm. This enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 180 km/h.

It is equipped with a 116kWh battery pack located under the floor and has a range of up to 473 kilometers after a full charge. The G 580 supports DC fast charging up to 200 kW, which can charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 32 minutes, and can also charge AC at rates up to 11 kW. The model retains the independent front suspension but now features an updated rigid rear axle, as well as underbody protection made of carbon and other elastomeric materials for added strength.

Mercedes-Benz G 580: off-road capabilities and features

The G-Class electric vehicle has impressive off-road capabilities, with breakover, approach and departure angles of 20.3 degrees, 32 degrees and 30.7 degrees respectively. It also has a water wading capability of up to 850mm. In addition, the electric vehicle includes three specialized functions: G-Turn, G-Steering and G-Crawl. G-Turn enables the vehicle to spin on the spot, while G-Steering activates torque vectoring to aid in tighter turns off-road. The G-Crawl feature allows the vehicle to move at extremely slow speeds as low as 2 km/h for precise crawling in challenging terrain.

The cabin is very similar to the classic G-Class, with dual 12.3-inch digital displays on the dashboard. The G 580 with EQ technology introduces an upgraded voice assistant that provides about 20 commands specifically tailored for the G-Class. Other features include new switchgear, passenger side handle, rear-seat entertainment system with dual 11.6-inch touchscreens, 360-degree camera and Burmester 3D sound system. For the electric version, the display features unique EQ-specific graphics, and the traditional locking differential switch has been replaced by controls for a “tank steering” function and low-range mode.

Mercedes-Benz EQS 450: key details

The EQS SUV is now available in two models: EQS 580 (7 seats) and EQS 450 (5 seats). The former is priced at Rs 162 crore and the latter at Rs 128 crore. Prices are ex-showroom. The car has the same 122kWh battery pack as the 7-seat model, delivering 536.5bhp and 858Nm of torque via a dual-motor configuration. It supports 200kW DC fast charging, which can charge the battery from 10% to 80% in just 31 minutes.
